How soon to ask for promotion/raise?

I started a new job in March at a big organisation. There’s lots of staff grades/very hierarchical.

I enjoy what I’m doing and I want to progress. I think I am overqualified for the post but that’s not that relevant as I applied for this role and want to do it! There are some people in the office who have been there 2 to 3 years on the same (low) grade as me.

I’ve had positive feedback from my manager so far.

How soon is too soon to ask for a promotion/the possibility of progression etc? I have a 6 month probation period so perhaps at the end of my first 6 months? I don’t want to look like I’m going in there and immediately assuming I should have a higher role. I know i’m still learning. But I do want to progress and want my manager to know this.

Any tips please? This is new for me.

Definitely not before you pass probation. In that discussion, after they've given you good feedback and told you that you've passed, you could say how much you like the organisation, that you feel ambitious and would like to look at ways of developing yourself with a view to progression to the next grade.

I would think around the year mark is standard enough.
