"Career Goals and Ambitions" when job hunting

After 20 years with my current employer, I have decided to start looking around for a role somewhere else.

In all honesty, all I want from my job is interesting and challenging work, to feel appreciated and be rewarded for my experience, knowledge and hard work.

As it has been so long since I last looked for a job, I've been reading about CVs, interviews etc, as I want to be as prepared as possible before putting myself out there. Something that worries me is being asked about my career goals and ambitions. I feel like I don't have any as such and I don't want to say that I want to work my way up to director/partner level just to appear ambitious, as it's not what I want to do. I'm known for having a strong technical knowledge in my field of expertise and for being thorough and working hard on advisory projects. I'm quite introverted and am not cut out for networking with strangers and bringing in new business etc.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to navigate this question without putting myself up for something I don't want to do or, on the other side, appearing to lack ambition?

My career goal is to continue developing my technical expertise and to apply it in ways that deliver real value to clients and colleagues. I take pride in being thorough, detail-oriented, and reliable on complex advisory projects, and I aim to build a reputation as someone who can be trusted to get things right.

While I’m more introverted by nature and not drawn to networking or business development, I believe there’s real strength in having people who focus deeply on the quality and accuracy of work. Over time, I’d like to progress into more senior roles where I can mentor others and help shape best practices in my field.
