Fed up of work not paying

Vivalavid · 20/04/2025 20:53

I am so fed up of work not paying. I'm a teaching assistant and I've really had enough. I'm literally broke with not a penny to my name and 5 days until payday. I am feeling depressed and angry and I noticed I get frustrated and irritated at work a few days before payday as well. Does anyone else feel like this? I'm sick and tired of never having the money to do anything.

Is your work paying you late? Your title implies it is but your post just reads like you are fed up with a low salary.

TAs are underpaid and undervalued in my opinion. But it isn’t going to change any time soon so if it doesn’t pay enough you will need to look for another job.

I don't get paid until the 25th, I have been looking but had no luck.

This doesn't bode well. Was thinking of looking for a part time TA role. A good TA is worth their weight in.salt OP. Hope you find something else.

The TA role has always in my opinion been a low paid role! Could you look to become a HLTA as that would attract a pay increase? Failing that, is there any other support roles you could do in school? Clerical Assistant? Office Manager? Not necessarily in current school but any other schools?

I do think TAs deserve more than they get.

So your regular payday? Work aren’t withholding money just that is it hard to get by on the amount you get?

You wage will feel low as you’re only paid for 39 weeks a year and school hours each day. Are you able to top up your hours working in wraparound care or a holiday club?

Yes, the more greedy companies keep putting their prices, the harder it's making it.

I do wrap around care (it's boring but helps) and breakfast club, but it's still not enough with my outgoings.

What do you do in the school holidays?

Relax a lot of the time because of exhaustion, not much else as nowadays I just can't afford to. Go to the pubs sometimes.

Is there a reason you need a term time only job? You'd earn more working all year round

PerkyGreenCat · 20/04/2025 21:14

I earn more than a TA but I feel the same. I'm exhausted. Tired of constantly being on the hustle as well as working full time.

I was in a low paid job and retrained to earn more money. So now I earn more money but I'm poorer than I was when I earned less! Everything has gone up so much. The country is absolutely fucked!

Hellodarknessmyoldfrien · 20/04/2025 21:14

Have you considered becoming a teacher?

I've done my time working weekends and lates and I don't want a job working with customers cause I can't stand people. I only enjoy working with children and the challenge it brings.

I get about £1600 a month after deductions and it's not enough

Seen last post, so all I said is a moot point.

£1600 isn't that badly paid 🤷🏻‍♀️

Additional work in the holidays or a different job all year round seems to be the obvious answers.

All the people I know who work in TA or other low paid roles in school do so for the benefit of being off in the holidays due to child care (and almost all have a working partner except one who has 2 disabled kids and no alternate childcare)

I am looking at the moment, it would help if other staff and parents appreciated what we do, but they don't.

I hear you Op.The pro rats element means you get fuck all of a very low wage. And yeah it’s pretty hard to get holiday work when ( like teachers) it’s the only time you get to do MOTs, dentists, see family etc. No days off in term time.

One of the growing trends is for independent SEN mentoring companies. Going to see students 1:1 at home. The pay is better ( not great) and you sort of get school holidays although there’s more training or being “on call” . Importantly it’s not pro rata so you get proper work benefits etc.

Most people can't afford to relax for 13 weeks a year - if you want to earn more then you need to work more I'm afraid. TA is awfully badly paid though.

BCBird · 20/04/2025 21:25

Wouldn't advise becoming a teacher. The relationship you have with the pupils will be different. U won't earn loads more to compensate for the extra work and stress. I've been doing it 30 years. Leaving early.

Glitterbaby17 · 20/04/2025 21:26

You could probably pick up some temporary nanny work for like £18 an hour over the holidays if you put discrete feelers out with parents/the community. Lots of people need it, it’s very expensive, and people would pay a premium for someone familiar.

The strain working with some SEN children isn't helping either. it's putting a lot of staff off next year, wondering where they'll be put. I've never known people to be so annoyed by it. For the shit pay I won't go above and beyond anymore.
