Failed probation school

gincakecomps · 20/04/2025 11:50

Trying to be deliberately vague. I was told before the holidays that I had failed my probation period. I carried on working as normal. However, I have received no further communication. Is this normal? What should I do next?

Seek advice from your union.

blueleavesgreensky · 20/04/2025 13:01

Do you mean you failed your probation period working at a school?

Latenightreader · 20/04/2025 13:04

Did they talk about extending it? I've known that to happen - six months becomes nine for example - but you should have received guidance.

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/04/2025 13:06

Are you a teacher, TA or office staff? I assume you had a formal meeting, so should have written communication soon (next week). I would speak to your union and ask school about the next steps.

MelloYellow · 20/04/2025 13:10

What is your role
typically a probation period is either a pass or dismissal
however if there’s other circumstances they can extend?
how were you told?

Veggielepsy · 20/04/2025 13:12

Do you mean they're extending probation or you're being given notice to leave?

gincakecomps · 20/04/2025 18:59

Support role in a school
Told via formal meeting with head
Have contacted union

Should be extended and then reviewed. What areas did you need to work on?

DelphiniumBlue · 20/04/2025 19:02

Did they tell you you what the next steps are? Whether your probation is being extended or whether they were ending your contract? And how long did you continue working for?
Speak to your union, to ACAS and check your contract. You need to know whether to turn up for work on Tuesday or not. This should have been made crystal clear to you.

RedHelenB · 20/04/2025 19:19

If you've failed it, usually it will be extended for another 6 months.

ShrinkingAndEmerging · 20/04/2025 19:41

Usually the school would extend your probation period for another 3 months.

Make sure you get clear guidance on what needs to be improved and ask for a monthly meeting to get feedback and guidance on your progress.

Schools can be toxic workplaces so ensure everything is put in writing.

gincakecomps · 21/04/2025 09:36

Performance issues (communication)
Extension hasn't been mentioned (my contract states this will only be done in exceptional circumstances)
I have received e-mails with classes for staff for next week/term - my name is on both

Exactly how long have you been there when head told you this? Was it over 6 months? Surely you had reviews at say 6 weeks and 4 months?

gincakecomps · 21/04/2025 09:54

Meeting at 6 months
Review at 1 month - all fine
Review at 3 months - just asked me to do/attend certain things (have done all they asked - easily proven if needed)

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 21/04/2025 11:05

What was said exactly at the meeting? Termination ? What are the next steps ? Did you not ask what does it mean and what happens next? What does the contract state happens if you fail?

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 21/04/2025 11:35

So 1 month - fine.

3 months - fine but do these few things.

6 months - performance issues, failed. But still come in and work for us.

Did the head teacher get the correct person? Was he meant to fail someone else?

It is definately not normal to continue to work after you've failed your probation period no, and if you have failed your probation and continued to work, that expains why you failed.

Thats a really odd thing to do.

gincakecomps · 21/04/2025 19:28

My contract says they can -

Give notice
Garden leave
Or arrange a meeting to discuss further

I asked the head about next steps and he said he needed to contact HR (academy)

OP posts:
CatamaranViper · 21/04/2025 20:21

The head should have contacted HR before your meeting for guidance and clarity, not after.
At the meeting they should have presented the reasons for failing your probation, along with evidence (ie minutes from previous meetings, timesheets etc). Then they should have outlined next steps (probation extension, termination, investigation etc).
If I were you, gather your own evidence and resea ch before you go back. Show evidence that you've done everything that's been asked of you, highlight any training you've received or support they've given you, basically do a gap analysis and see if you can identify that the areas you're failing are things they havent supported you with or haven't told you.
Also speak union reps,

Chaseandstatus · 21/04/2025 20:23

No one can answer this question apart from your employer. Good luck.
