What job

What job can you do within the legal profession that doesn’t require a degree, are there any?

Apart from Legal Secretary I can’t think of one 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’d love a (late) career change but have no qualifications that would get me a job as a solicitor, or paralegal for example.

Anyone work in law that can think of options that may be suitable. I have more years experience (than I care to remember) working in an office, but no qualifications or experience that would help in a career of this type (unless you count life experience)

Am wondering how feasible a change would be, and also if there are any jobs I could actually do.

You don’t necessarily need a degree to be a paralegal.
Get your foot in the door in an office role in a large law firm and take it from there.

Thank you. I will do some research on this

I suppose that’s technically true, but the reality is I can’t imagine anywhere wanting to hire a paralegal with no experience or qualifications!

Legal secretary or PA, marketing, IT, finance, business development, DEI, general admin, HR - all roles needed within law firms though!

Thank you, I’ve looked at legal secretary and had a look at online course for a paralegal which could be an option.
Although newly qualified I’d also have experience working in an office role doing accounts so hopefully that experience would count.

What attracts you to working in the legal profession?

mulberrybag5 · 18/04/2025 22:22

Legal assistants are usually entry level positions.
Call centres inside law firms
business support services - admin roles

Since I was at school I wanted to do law, but for various reasons, didn’t.
I very much regret this. 😕
I have done some online criminology courses and enjoyed those. I’ve read various books by barristers and find the work they do fascinating. I’ve been into magistrates courts (was considering becoming a magistrate) and enjoyed that experience too.
I have a couple of friends who work in the legal profession and having had conversations with them (about the boring bits too), it’s something I find interesting.
I am a very organised person, like fact finding, finding information for people, I work well under pressure, I have great attention to detail & I think doing something in the legal profession, such as a paralegal, would utilise those skills.

I’ve also looked at what jobs are available within the Police force (office based).

This isn’t a new interest, I just haven’t been in a position where I could potentially follow it up before by gaining some qualifications.
It may all be a pipe dream of course but I’d like to think I’ve looked into all job options and my suitability and how practical it would be to learn / train before I decide it can’t be done, or there isn’t a suitable way in.

Look at civil service jobs - there’s often entry level roles that are in the legal departments/courts

mulberrybag5 · 19/04/2025 18:21

You could do clerking in the courts?

mulberrybag5 · 19/04/2025 18:22

Or what about the CPS? When I was a trainee a job in the CPS was like the pinnacle because of the benefits! Not so much now and they are working in such tough conditions but there are always admin and case assistant roles going!
