New job situation

I am half a year in a new job and I absolutely hate it. The people are awful, the work isn't very interesting and I know deep down (or not so deep down) that I would never want a long term future there.

I have been looking for new jobs, but I work in a concentrated industry, and finding an equivalent job is extremely difficult (not least because I am looking to leave six months after starting the last one) - the job I left is pretty much the one that would suit me best.

I had a meeting with somebody from my old job after a couple of months in the new job last year, and they checked whether my old workplace would take me back, but the response was no (I'm not sure what the reasoning was).

I'm feeling at a bit of a dead end, but it seems harsh to think that this would be a career ending mistake. I'm thinking of trying to get back in touch with my old job, but cringe at the thought of being told no a second time - it may be that the best they can do is give me advice on what to do (although I am not really sure what that would be).

Would be interested to hear if anybody has ever been in a similar situation and how you resolved it. Quitting the new job without anything else lined up is very much a last resort, but I would consider it if nothing else came along.

Don’t forget there’s a reason you left your last job. Be careful not to look at it now with rose-tinted glasses. I’d bide my time and keep one eye on the job market before I applied for a completely new company. It won’t matter you’ve been there a handful of months. Ppl aren’t always suited to every job. Don’t make a hasty decision. Your old place has already said they’re not interested.

I already have been applying for new jobs. There just isn't anything out there that suits (my old employer did a very specific type of work). I left my old job to get away from working for a person who has now left, so I feel doubly foolish...

I’m in a not dissimilar situation but I’m in the public sector so I need to interview for anything. If you hadn’t already asked I would say definitely ask about going back but as you have already asked and it was a no, I think you need to accept that’s a no unless a specific role comes up to apply for.

perhaps revisit with ex colleague why you were told no but I can’t imagine the situation will have changed

Difficult one. I think you loose nothing with trying again to speak to someone with power in the previous job; but be prepared for anything.

Otherwise you will have to stick to current job until you find something else.

Please do not ask for advice in old job as it sounds immature. They are not responsible for your decisions. Just say you made a mistake and what are the chances of returning, if there are any vacancies available.

You have to be very sure before you leave a job to avoid this situation. They may think you just like to run away from things instead of working on it/ try your improve the situation.

Yeah it's cringeworthy having to go back to them again, but I am kind of thinking what is there to lose (again...). Rubbish situation to be in. I was at the old place for nearly 10 years so I can see why it looks like it is crazy to not like the new place after 6 months, but it's seriously toxic.

Alot of companies don't take back leavers as you can get in a revolving door situation. Are you in the type of industry where you could try an agency? You can do different roles and be made permanent. Is it marketing?

Edited

Unfortunately not (it's a profession with numbers/focused on building things) so no potential for agency work.
