My son will be working at this hospital for the next two years..... Just finished uni. Any ideas where he could rent close by please. He hasn't bought a car yet.

Rental market is very competitive due to the uni
the majority of Lancaster is walkable and all accessible by bike
bus service ok and stop right outside hospital but he might struggle with early/lates and
weekends
bowerham moorlands and Fairfield area very close
there’s some great flatson the quay but can be pricey to rent

Morecambe he’d need to cycle take about 20/25 minutes on a bike avoid west end of Morecambe
heysham I wouldn’t there’s 2 rd you’d have to cycle on ones a bypass and unlit few cyclists being killed on there and other is quite rural again unlit I wouldn’t cycle on there

There’s busses from Morecambe and Heysham though. Agree to avoid the West End thought. You could also try Halton, Hest Bank, Garstang, Cockerham but you’d need to check the bus times for when he starts work.

If he's a Resident Doctor then I would say live in Lancaster if no car, the buses to surrounding villages like Hest Bank, Halton have limited hours. With a car the surrounding villages would be nice but beware there aren't enough parking permits for all staff at the hospital.
In Lancaster avoid Skerton, The Ridge and The Marsh. Morecambe has some ok areas - Bare, Torrisholme but Morecambe is opposite side of Lancaster to the hospital.

Worth look for a room in a house share first and get to know the area. Most of Lancaster is walking distance but it is hilly. The 1A/1 and the 100 are the most frequent bus services at 6 then 4 an hour Mon-Sat less on a Sunday and run into evenings as both serve the uni.

He could probably rent a room at university of Cumbria over the summer in their halls that a stones throw away. I think staff parking is expensive and the one way system around the city centre is unpredictable at rush “hour” and does grind to a halt reasonably regularly tbh. Any accident around town or on the M6.

The hospital is right in the middle of Lancaster so any properties on a university bus route will have busses that go right past the RLI every few mins on their way to the Uni but it's walkable from most of the popular areas. There will be tons of house shares with post grad students or recent graduates who have decided to stay in Lancaster and there's a lot of flat type accommodation aimed at young professionals.

It's a lovely vibrant tiny city which buzzes when the students are there but still has a lot going on the rest of the time.

Parking is an absolute nightmare at the RLI so not having a car will not be an issue at all. Staff are encouraged not to drive to work and Lancaster it's self is very geared up to cater for the thousands of car-less students.
