If you have a sedentary job how do you make it work for you

At my wits end, really like my job but it's just so unbelievably sedentary and has taken a while to realise it's making me feel ill. Can't incorporate lots of breaks due to targets so no dead time if that makes sense. Even if I exercise later on in the day it doesn't feel like it's making up for the 9 hours on my arse. Help.

Can you try a standing desk? Or a treadmill desk?

NuffSaidSam · 10/04/2025 18:27

Get a standing desk? Take calls on a treadmill/while walking?

roseymoira · 10/04/2025 18:28

If it’s making you ill then the job isn’t for you.

Other than that, a walk at lunch time. Get up earlier to do a workout or do one after work

SpottedDonkey · 10/04/2025 18:30

A brisk 5km walk in my lunch break, every single day.

How much exercise do you do that you can’t fit it into the 4 hours each day you’re not at work, sleeping, eating, showering?

Surely you just manage your time better, you could exercise before you start, do something in your lunch break, do something after work.

I cycle too and from work, and potter around while doing it.

I got a home treadmill and do 3 x 10 min power walks each day (same time it takes people to walk to the kitchen to make a cuppa) OR I do a 30 min power walk on my lunch then eat at my desk.

I work from home and was sitting at my desk all day. Now I get up earlier and. Go out for a 40 minute walk every morning before I start (I think of it as my “commute” to work!) I got a standing desk and a walking pad so I usually get some more steps in depending what work I’m doing (I’ve not got the coordination to walk and type but I can walk and read!) then I go to 2 or 3 gym classes a week in the evenings. You’d probably be surprised at what you can fit in movement wise if you really want to.

i have a sedentary work from home job. I walk 2 miles every morning with the dog and do the school run (but is not far as school is on my road) and run 3 times a week. I get my 10,000 steps in every day, except for the days I go to the office weirdly. I do get up and take regular breaks at home though, every hour really. Let the dog out, make a drink, pop upstairs to the loo etc

I have a desk job all day but do 15k steps a day minimum. I am up at 5.30 and between taking out the dog, and walking up and down the living room, I do 5k steps before I leave for work. By the time I am home, I have usually done 10k steps and then make sure I get to 15k before I go to bed. Largely as I am short and gain weight very easily if I don’t burn at least 2000 cals in total per day. But also for fitness. I am also in a walking group so walk weekends and 1 week day usually.

Get out for a short walk at lunchtime, stand up and stretch every 15 mins (proper stretches, not just yawning type), go straight to the gym after work. The latter this was much harder when my DCs were young though, I did let it slack then. I think getting outside at lunchtimes is a minimum, no matter what the weather, take an umbrella, even just sit out under shelter if you can.

Oh me too op! Trying to build in an early gym session each day and a swim
