I don’t understand this contract, notice period whilst in probation - help!

Hello!

I’m coming to the end of my probationary period, and want to leave. To say I dislike my job is an understatement. I’m deeply unhappy and want to leave, I’m a single parent but have savings from a redundancy last year. I was hoping to keep the money but honestly I’m going to take the risk and just leave and hope for the best. I thought I could find a job while in a job, but it’s impossible as I’m too busy and knackered in the evenings to look.

Any idea what this means? How much notice do I have to give?

But I’m not intending on including this job on my CV

then you may get asked why their is the gap

Doggymummar · 09/04/2025 19:34

Three months

I’m so unhappy in my role, it’s having an impact on my mental health so I’d rather just leave. It’s a toxic environment, with archaic systems. The role I’m in has a high turn over of staff for good reason.

My current job didn’t ask me to provide references. They asked for my five year employment history from HMRC app and then contacted the HR department themselves.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/04/2025 19:43

Wow, I’ve not been asked for that before - surely they need your permission first?

Be careful about just pretending the job didn’t exist. I worked in a team where someone during probation for lying about a gap on cv (where I work a condition of the job offer is sharing your hmrc job history).

Ahsheeit · 09/04/2025 19:43

I'd match the 1 month for the probationary period. It's not as if they can sack you...

Unbeleevable · 09/04/2025 19:46

@Lovelysummerdays snap! It was a condition of our offer of employment where I worked to agree to share your job history from hmrc

and they took up two references

and checked your LinkedIn profile

so make sure you cover your tracks op if you decide to quiet quit!

Cherryblossom200 · 09/04/2025 19:49

I’ve left my current job off linked in, I was just going to sort of add it as a freelancer role 😬

How about this just hand in my three months notice, and negotiate down to 1 month, and get a reference. Otherwise I just do the three months and do very little!

They told me to download and email it across but it was condition of my employment offer. I do think it’s becoming more common.

They didn’t even tell me they were checking references but my old boss messaged me to say that a request had been emailed.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/04/2025 20:22

Wow! I honestly didn’t think they could do that. Normally I’ve always just had to provide two sources of references.

They can usually do whatever they like at offer time as employee wants the job so hardly likely to say no
