Union representation

shuffleofftobuffalo · 06/04/2025 23:45

I have been a member of my union for many years (civil service). My current department does not recognise my union for collective bargaining.

I need personal representation just now - does my employer have to accept my union rep for personal matters?

Yes I believe so. But best to check with the union to confirm. Or HR if you are comfortable doing that

I believe so

Union rep should be allowed to attend a disciplinary and / or grievence

Does your department recognise another union instead? If so I’d switch to that.

Don't do this - you aren't entitled to representation if you do. An employer must permit your union rep to represent you in grievance or discipinary proceedings. Collective bargaining recognition is irrelevant.

Sorry, I should have said only change unions after the issue you need help with is fully resolved. Apologies!

Thanks all!

Decent union representation = worth their weight in gold

To be fair, if the OP is satisfied with their union there is no real reason to change. Recognition for collective bargaining isn't relevant when it comes to personal issues, and just being recognised does not actually mean good - in fact sometimes it can mean exactly the opposite! I was a member of a "not recognised union" (still am, but retired now), and when our team was faced with redundancies the recognised union was so bloody useless that my union stepped in and "supported" everyone in the team even though I was the only member! The recognised union wanted to roll over and agree to the redundancies. We didn't, and we won.
