Interview...Do I call them if I have not heard back????

Hello :-)

I went for an interview for a job that I really really want on Tuesday. They said they would be asking for a second interview if I was successful in this one.

The interview went very very well and at the end they both smiled and said they were confident I would get a second interview, so they would e-mail me the outline of job expectations so we can discuss them in the next interview.

Well, I know they want whoever they hire to start in 2 weeks...and it is now Thursday and I have not gotten the e-mail or a call.

Did they change their minds????

Would it be weird to call and just say thank you for having me the other day and it was nice to meet you (maybe bring their attention back to me) or would that be weird? Should I just wait???

Help!!! I am being driven insane just wanting to know!!!!

Just wondered, have you heard yet?

emmabemmasmom · 31/05/2008 09:02

Hi Yeah well I went in on Thursday and the boss had to help her mom with something (I didn't ask) so she won't be back in the office until Monday so she said she would let me know then. So now I have to wait until Monday! I just wish they would have been straight forward with the procedure at the first interview so there would not be so much confusion!

She told me how they have been screwed over in the past and that is why she is doing such a long process, which I can understand. They should have just said from day one though...so I don't know!! We will see!

Thanks for asking!

That's ok. Hope it all comes good. Don't forget to post and let us know.

annh · 02/06/2008 12:49

Have you heard anything yet?

Elmosgirl · 02/06/2008 12:51

Yes make sure you let us know...am dying to find out what they say to you next.

emmabemmasmom · 02/06/2008 19:45

ARGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They SAID they would phone today to let me know...but did they??????????

NO NO NO NO!!!!

I phoned at 5:15 to say WTF (well not in those exact words) and even though they close at 5:30 they had already switched the phones to say call tomorrow.

So what do I do now????? AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Oh no! Sorry, I have no professional advice to offer but I would be hopping mad if it was me! In fact, unless I really, really needed this job I would be seriously considering whether I wanted to work for this company. Obviously things happen and it could be that the person who was supposed to call is still not in because of problems with her mum but someone in the organisation should have called you with an update. It's also not very professional of them to have turned off the phones so early.

mumdebump · 02/06/2008 20:13

Have been watching this thread as can't believe how awfully they are treating you (big understatement!).

I know you really want this job but I would be so tempted to tell them to stuff it. They may have been messed about by people in the past but that is no excuse for their behaviour towards you and presumably the other applicant for this job.

I would phone first thing tomorrow and speak to this woman and firmly but politely ask for her to make her decision there and then as you have been patient and professional throughout this whole sorry chain of events and the least they could do is respect that. I would also be looking for another job to apply for (not cause I think you won't get this one but because I would hate to be messed around so.) Am wondering if they can't decide between you and the other applicant and are messing you about to see who caves in first and tells them to they don't want the job.

flowerybeanbag · 02/06/2008 20:14

My advice would be not to work for this company, they are clearly crap, I would suggest writing to someone in charge detailing what you have been through and enclosing an invoice for all the expenses you have incurred.

But if you still really want the job, all you can do is phone again in the morning. What a nightmare!

emmabemmasmom · 02/06/2008 20:35

Yeah I do reallyy want the job as the job it self is really great.

Also, I do kinda need it as my DH and I are looking to buy our first house and the extra income (even if half goes to CM) would make the dream come true and I don't have any other leads at the moment. I had to sign the contract with my CM too so I didn't loose her so I kinda do need it or something very soon!

I do understand where everyone is coming from believe me I am livid! I would not normally want to work for people who behaved this way either. I think that because it is my dream job I am forgiving all their sins, but maybe I shouldn't be.

I am calling first thing in the morning. We will see what happens then... sad at the idea that I may not get it

Be positive. They may offer you the job and actually be great to work for.

fizzbuzz · 02/06/2008 20:59

They have been messed about by people

Quelle suprise. They sound unprofessional and incompetent. The job may be great, but waht about the culture and staff.

Do you want to work for someone who treats people like that? I would look on it as a lucky escape if you don't get it

jamescagney · 03/06/2008 09:11

please let us know what happens! I must say that I would tempted to tell em stuff it as well but if you really want the job then they will respect you for having the chutzpah (sp) for speaking up firmly!
good luck!

annh · 03/06/2008 11:01

Any news? Have you called them this morning?

mammyjo · 03/06/2008 11:23

I am not surprised that they have been messed around by people previously if this is the way they treat potential employees. It's a shame you really want the job as I would have been sorely tempted to tell them where to stick their job by now!
I am amazed that they have had 2 days work out of you for free too, unbelievable.

Hope you hear something soon as the continuing waiting must be a nightmare for you

emmabemmasmom · 03/06/2008 11:56

Right...so I calling this morning....

She said that I did not get the job and it was nothing about me, but that the other person was more dedicated to the company...

WHAT???? Right so I went through all this hassle, then I had to call them because they were to incompitent to make a simple phone call and then she gives me some lame excuse as to why I did not get the job.

OHHHH I am so LIVID. I have to admit I cried though but now that I have had time to deal with it I am happy in a way as you are all right and why would I want to work for people who would do this?

I also asked about sending in my expense report and she said that it was voluntary work and that no payment would be made. Is it right for them to do that?

Oh well...currently sending away my CV again...anyone know of any jobs going?? haha

Sorry about typeos...to mad to type correctly!!!

OP posts:
mumdebump · 03/06/2008 12:11

As Fizzbuzz said, consider it a lucky escape. Can you name the company now so we know who never to bother applying for jobs with? (apologies for appalling grammar) They obviously want someone who will fall over backward to please them and work all hours (unpaid). At your next interview, remember it is as much about you interviewing the company as it is the other way around. If anyone else mucks you about like this, run a mile. Hope you get a nice job for a lovely company soon.

annh · 03/06/2008 12:12

That is disgraceful behaviour! Unfortunately, because you did not clarify before doing the two days of work whether it would be paid, they probably can get away with not paying you. However, when you have calmed down, I would be very tempted to write them a calm, reasoned letter outlining your dis-satisfaction with their recruitment process - I'm not surprised they claim to have been messed around before if this is the way they conduct business! Is this a large company?

emmabemmasmom · 03/06/2008 12:49

The job was at Renella Hair Salon in Falkirk. My job would have been teaching in their traning school and reception. It is a very large company with over 40 stylists and over 100 people coming in through the week for the traning school.

I liked it as I have worked in a salon before and also I was a teacher...so it hit on both of my loves. I really like being able to teach again as I cannot teach in schools yet as I do not have the relevent certificates in this country (I am from Chicago)

So yeah do not work for them or go there haha

Thanks for the well wishes and I am serious if anyone knows of any jobs I will try my luck eh?

They did make you aware that the work would be unpaid, but unpaid doesn't mean out of pocket. Unpaid means no salary. You made them aware early on that you would be subject to considerable expense to do this unpaid work as part of their selection process and I would certainly advise you to make lots of fuss until it is paid.

I would write a letter to whoever is in charge, outlining your dissatisfaction with the process and submitting details of the expenses you incurred.

Sorry you've been though this. Easy to say after the event, but a recruitment process often speaks volumes about an organisation, so I feel you have had a lucky escape. Onwards and upwards to find something better for you

chocbiscuits · 03/06/2008 16:21

Hello,
much sympathies, I was talking to DH about this after you had done that unpaid work and the first thing he said was 'They didn't want to pay for a temp'.

Did anybody actually get a job one wonders???

fizzbuzz · 03/06/2008 16:48

I think you should write a letter too. However from what little I know of the hairdressing industry I understand that to do a trial is normal sometimes, as you have do do styling hair (am I right?) However you should still be paid.

I used to work in design. "Trials" were quite common in that industry as well....one of the reasons I got out....too precious and competitive, and lots of small crappy companies who didn't give a about the employee. It sounds fairly similar............
