Sorry, it's me again with another 'should I apply for this job' thread

It is for a school admin assistant, actually at the school my dc go to.

It is Mon-Fri, 9-3 and term time only, which obviously couldn't be anymore perfect.

Advert states the duties, which are word processing, operation of SIMS system to include attendance and admissions, collection of monies (dinners and visits).

It doesn't specifically ask for experience, but states that you must have good standards of numeracy, literacy and IT, which I do have but can't prove as have no IT qualifications and only a D in English Language and a F in Maths (i'd get a better mark if i did maths now).

So, should I apply ?? I don't want to fell like a prat for applying for something way out of my reach though if you see what I mean, especially since they actually know me. They might think I wasted my time and theirs applying.

Always apply - nothing to lose

CrackerOfNuts · 15/05/2008 10:21

I think I can actually get a form from the office, so should I ask if they are looking for someone experienced or just not mention it ?

Don't mention it, just apply!

binkleandflip · 15/05/2008 10:22

Dont mention it at all - if you're confident that you have the skills (although not the qualifications to prove it) then go along and show them what you can do.

DO NOT mention lack of actual qualifications unless they specifically ask - if they do then side step the question and respond with details of EXPERIENCE you have - which counts for more at the end of the day really.

Not sure Aimsmum.

Thing is, I have no office experience either.

I have a friend who was an admin assistant in a school a few years ago, so she'd probably help me fill in the form.

what experience do you have?

Sidge · 15/05/2008 10:40

Apply!! You've got nothing to lose

zippitippitoes · 15/05/2008 10:48

apply the application is good experience but get someone to do your application with you who really knows how to apply successfully for jobs it makes all the difference i am sure

also have you tried workworld the agency

my dd2 got a temp job through them doing data entry and some sort of invoicing

she had only got experience as a cleaner and in a bar kitchen and in a cafe as assistant

she has no it quals and some gcses tho she does have maths and emglish

but my dd1 did her cv and she got a crap temp job that dd1 had first with the council she left after a few weeks cos she hated it but they gave her anothe rtemp job she did it for several months and then it came up as publicly advertised and better paid she applied and got it and is now on about 16k

so she has gone from a cleaner on min wage to that

ypu can do the same

good luck

zippitippitoes · 15/05/2008 10:50

and good thread title lolololol

at least i know whomit it is before i open the thread

CrackerOfNuts · 15/05/2008 11:48

LOL Zippi

I read the ad wrong actually, it is 4 days a week ont five, 9-3, although it states it is 20 hours and obviously 4 days with those hours is 24 hours. 4 days is even better though.

I will ask for a form when I go and pick the kids up I think.

Binkle -I have worked as a room attendant, childminder and evening merchandiser, so nothing that remotly relates to this really.

I find it so frustrating, because I am always applying for jobs that I know I could do given the chance, but noone seems to want to give me one.

Def get help on the application - you will prob need to tick the right boxes in your replies to get an interview

MascaraOHara · 15/05/2008 11:55

Definitely apply.

sounds perfect.

and

GOOD LUCK!!

write, confidently, don't mention your weaknesses (unless specifically asked), don't justify yourself. smile, hold your head high and 'be' Confident.

You have everything to gain from this. How exciting!

LIZS · 15/05/2008 15:07

Apply , you've nothing to lose. However they may or may not encourage applications form current parents which you'll only know if you ask. They might take lunch out of the working hours - hence 20 not 24.

CrackerOfNuts · 15/05/2008 21:12

A few parents already work there, so i think that would be ok.

I got a form anyway., and my friend is going to help me with it tommorow.
