Have I made a big mistake?

I’m coming up to the end of my probationary period in a new role. I’m really not enjoying it, role is awful. Historically there has been a high churn rate of people in the role, hence why it’s fairly paid well to try and keep the person from leaving.

My manager is new to the company and I think she has had no experience of people management before. She’s imposing crazy rules and a sort of call centre type monitoring system. She’s menopausal and her moods are insane. She’s swearing, huffing and puffing constantly and generally a terrible line manager. My team can’t stand her, but she’s somehow still in the role.

I’m deeply unhappy and want to leave, I’ve starting looking externally. But today another team approached me as they have a vacancy for a new role which has become available. It’s more of an admin role and I’m pretty sure a few levels down from me. But in terms of the team/line manager and job I think I’d enjoy it. I’m nearing 50 and a full time single parent to one child, I enjoy working but sometimes find it stressful doing roles where there is too much expectation from me - so this might suit me. But I am concerned that firstly it’s a risk showing interest in a new role, am I shooting myself in the foot? Will the company then just ask me to leave if they know I’m unhappy? Plus I’m not sure how it would work pay wise, I’m not in a position to to take a pay reduction 😬 I would want to be on the same salary.

I don’t know what to do, all I know is that I’m really unhappy where I am.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing to look internally, lots of people do it and being unhappy in a certain role doesn’t equal being unhappy in general, sometimes that particular job isn’t the right fit but a different department is and that’s okay!

Pay wise though you’d have to see what the salary offer is for the other job vacancy to see if you can apply. If it is a few levels down in terms of bands/scale then it’s unlikely you’re going to be paid the same as you are now though so it would be a salary hit.

Showing interest in staying with the company isn’t a bad thing. Changing so early on might raise eyebrows but you have to do what’s right for you.

Try and establish salary - ask for an informal chat with the hiring manager.

In many places, you are supposed to tell your current manager before applying for an internal move.

Just things you should consider as you weigh up your next steps.

Oh, and I hope your own menopause is a breeze when it comes. I lost sympathy for you when you dissed her for being menopausal. Some people are just bitches and menopause can do horrible things to those of us who aren’t.

I’m going through the menopause myself! I’m nearly 50, but I’m making sure it’s not impacting others. There is a difference, her rages are well known in the company.

I’m going to take your advice and have an informal chat with the hiring manager. I have a feeling it’ll be a fair bit under what I’m on, which rules it out. I was hoping they might just let me move across on the same pay grade.

Why would they let you stay on a higher pay grade than the job you would be doing?

Cherryblossom200 · 03/04/2025 20:45

Sorry, I mean in an ideal world they let me move to the new role on the same salary I’m currently on. Despite it not being on the same pay grade.

I think that’s unrealistic, a job is worth a certain wage for a reason- responsibility, time, knowledge, capability, workload, leadership level etc, if you want an easier job (totally understandable) then the price you pay is the salary to match that.

And the rages might not be due to the menopause. Like I said, some people are just horrible.

Anyway that aside! Their hands will be tied on pay if it’s a big company. There will likely be a band for the role and they can’t go over it.

I HAVE seen people moved across and stay on the same salary where there has been a (small) difference. But they have been proven members of the team, with a good reputation, highly valued, rather than relatively ’untested’ people and certainly not still on probation.

Have the chat, it’s all you can do at this stage. Good luck!

Cherryblossom200 · 03/04/2025 20:50

Yeah that’s what I thought. It won’t be an option for me 😢

I think I’ll just look externally and hope to find something which is the same salary but a nicer job.

Google salaries for the same job. It might be available on Glassdoor or in a previous job advert.
