Redundant - would you take the first job offered?

I don’t have a job offer yet but potentially expecting at least one and potentially another. I’ve am officially unemployed as of Tuesday this week. I’d been actively looking during garden leave. We all know it’s a tough gig out there. Would you take the first job offered or wait for the right role?

the first role (had 4 interviews, said I was the only person being spoken to now and had to fill out an application form with refs, social security numbers etc. HR said they’d get back to me later in the week ( it’s now Thursday). Reviews on Glassdoor seem mixed. US company.

the second role sounds great but I saw on linked in someone has been made redundant in the department I’d be working and know HR had said they’d had to furlough staff last year. So that is sending a few alarm bells. Let’s face it though it’s happening all over.

Would you take a job regardless or would you take your time to find the right job? Money will only last 6 months and I see so many people in my industry being laid off so lots of hot competition out there for fewer roles! wWYD? I do need to work as have debts and house to pay off over next 8 years!

Depends on your sector. I work in PR / Comms and it is so awful out there right now I would take a job. Not necessarily one with glaring red flags but certainly something good enough. You can always keep an eye out for a few months and see if something better comes along, citing that the new role isn't a good fit. I guess, for me, having a bird in hand is better than using 6 months of savings and then really having to take absolutely anything. Of course, it depends on your sector - I say this coming from a notoriously competitive industry that is only getting tougher

I’d just take what you get offered, you can always keep looking and leave if you get something better

There was no furlough last year though so not sure what company 2 are talking about. Do they mean laying people off?

Acc0untant · 03/04/2025 16:26

What do they mean by furloughs last year?

Ellie1015 · 03/04/2025 16:26

Yes I would take any job and continue looking for ideal job.

I work in the third sector so loads of redundancies and huge competition for roles. I started my redundancy notice period in Feb and took the first job offered. It's only a 1 year contract so I'm hoping to secure something better next year but for now I just needed something lined up. I'd take the first offer if I was you.

Almahart · 03/04/2025 16:35

I would definitely take it

HappyHolidai · 03/04/2025 16:44

In your situation I would take one of those two, assuming you are offered both.

You can always keep looking, but hopefully it will be a good fit at least for a while.

Furlough last year? Why would anyone describe it as that?

Reallyannoyedwithpitaboss · 05/04/2025 14:33

So they could take staff back on when there was enough work! I’ve been offered a job yay! Well will get contract on Monday! There’s a lot riding on it expectation wise which is what is making me nervous! Anyway will give it a go. Thanks all!

Congrats. You’re in a good position as you now have a 6 month buffer whilst working. I hope you don’t need it and the role is a good fit!
