Anyone here work in M&S HR? Student transferring stores

Hello, my DC has worked at our local store for 1.5 years. They were initially on a temporary 6 or so week contract for Xmas, but then they were offered a permanent contract. They are starting uni in September in a different city and would like to transfer stores for term-time, ideally returning to our local store for the holidays. Is this at all possible? My DC seems to get different advice.

I'm commenting as I'm intrigued to see the replies... surely this isn't a thing? Stores recruit on need for hours to be covered, either store can't just be without their employee for a significant amount of time surely? I hope all works out for him though.

Sorry I don't know if M& S do it. My nephew was lucky that JD Sports allowed him to transfer from the store in Liverpool to the one in Reading when he moved there for university.

Thanks for the replies

OnTheSick - you are probably right. That does make sense. However, there are probably students who normally live in my DCs university city who may be moving to where we live ordinarily. They could swap. But yes, I agree you cannot make a job somewhere else if that job/vacancy doesn't exist.

Sainsburys used to do this a lot a few years ago but stopped it.

My daughter was in just this position with M&S and they weren’t able to do it. She was in a good position to get a job in the store in her university town if they had a vacancy but they couldn’t accommodate her coming home for holidays. The systems are too unwieldy to transfer them quickly between stores. It was a shame.

Theunamedcat · 01/04/2025 17:54

If there is a vacancy yes M&S usually recruit heavily in my dds university town and they have had a couple of back and forth transfers

I have no experience with M&S but Primark let people transfer to stores in different cities.

30 years ago, my bf did exactly that.

He worked in M&S in Leeds during term time, and then back to his M&S home branch during the holidays.

They might still allow you to do it.

If there’s a vacancy in the store close to uni it’s a possibility but I doubt very much they’d consider transferring every time he goes home in the holidays it would be more hassle than it’s worth

It is absolutely a thing for many businesses. My DD does the same for a restaurant chain.

Postslikethese · 01/04/2025 20:06

Next do it. My DD swaps between home & uni stores every holidays

Toomanywhatsapps · 01/04/2025 20:28

Thank you all so much for your replies! I will suggest that my DC chats again with the relevant person in their store. Fingers crossed - some of you seem to have experience of this sort of flexibility with other retailers/restaurants. It would be shame if it doesn't happen as my DC enjoys their job and has the training. I guess it depends on availability of jobs, but I do recognise it could be a hassle too.

My sister did but not with M&S. She transferred from a small supermarket in our local town which no longer exists to one where she went to university.
She won’t mind me saying that she’s never been backward in coming forward and as soon as realised there was a branch close to her halls of residence she made contact with the store manager herself and started shifts there in her first week,

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 01/04/2025 21:21

My daughter is hoping to do this with her job. She has been told they prioritise people who can work Xmas in the new store though.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 02/04/2025 20:34

I think it depends on positions available in
each store. I know some stores are reluctant to do this because the students will leave to return home at key busy times such as Christmas and Easter.

Spendysis · 02/04/2025 22:47

McDonald's used to let students transfer between branches while at university
