Washing work gear - unreasonable?

Ds is 16 and has a part time job in a pub restaurant. He’d tell you he’s a chef but it’s food prep, clearing up, helping the proper chefs. They have given him one set of uniform (white jacket, stripe trousers, apron). He finished work at 10pm and is back at 2pm tomorrow. His boss expects the clothes to be washed and dried before his next shift,

We have a washing machine. We do not have a tumble drier and will not be buying one. Two questions - is it standard for kitchen staff to have to have freshly laundered kit every shift? And if it is, he needs more than one of each item, right?

He definitely needs more than one set.
I'm sure I was supplied with three sets. That was over 40years ago.

Some jobs I've had, the purchase of uniform and also the washing has a tax deduction. If the company won't supply more than 1 uniform, I'd be looking at buying addition sets from ebay, vinted etc. He can check online about tax deductions specific o his role, but I would think this he can claim.

vinted a good idea for the jacket and trousers. Apron branded but this constant washing is ridiculous.

They have to give him more than one set.
Freshly cleaned uniform (not just ‘clean because I didn’t spill anything on it’) is not ridiculous when you’re working around food prep.

I've worked in a few kitchen /fast food places and yes this was standard - one set of uniform and it had to be freshly laundered for each shift.
I would wash my uniform once I got home (often midnight or later), and put it on a radiator to dry. If it wasn't dry in the morning then I would go to a laundrette to tumble dry it (no tumble dryer at home at the time).

I understand the need for fresh kit. I also think that if they want fresh kit, they supply at least 2 sets.

Your DS should get an extra tax allowance. Think its £60 pa. Some employers add this on automatically, like mine. Some don't and there is a guide on MoneySavingExpert.

I think an absolute minimum is 2 sets of uniform. Guessing he's working the weekend? When I worked at a supermarket, the students got 2 tops and 2 fleece tops for working 16-20 hours a week.

Ridiculous. My 16yo has a similar job and has 2 sets of clothes.

honestly I would buy some spares off Vinted
but so long as his apron is clean , they won’t care!
