Hi everyone, I had an email to say I’ve been shortlisted for an interview as a school cleaner at my sons school. My interview is on Monday, I’m so nervous as I don’t actually have no cleaning experience only experience is housework at home 🙈 does anyone know what sort of questions will be asked and how to ace this interview as I really really want/need this job and want to stand out from everyone else. Any advice or feedback is welcome. Thank you

Well done! You can give examples of being a quick learner and hard worker.
They may ask you a safeguarding question, they want to know you know the correct procedure if you see/ hear something concerning for example. You can say you will speak to the designated safeguarding officer/ refer to the policy if unsure.
Good luck!

Think about all the things you would ask if you were hiring for the role, and work out your answers. I’d either write them down or practice out loud with a friend or family member.

I’d be prepared for the standard “why do you want this job?” “Why do you think you’d be good at this job?” “Why do you think you’d enjoy this job?” As well as anything you can think of specific to the role like “what is the highest priority in terms of cleaning?” (eg maybe it’s cleaning up something dangerous like liquid causing a slippery patch in a hallway), “how would you deal with pen stains on walls / poo on toilets / tiny bits of paper everywhere?”

Try googling cleaner interview questions and you’ll probably find some ideas.

Thank you both, I used to work in a preschool so I’m aware of safeguarding which is handy and I have also been Googling questions I may be asked. I’m just not as confident speaking and feeling under pressure as I get worried I will mess it up. I’ve got the weekend to practice tho so hopefully I got this.

if you're asked the question Why do you think you’d be good at this job? you can say that you're meticulous about Health and Safety and aware of the safety obligations of both the school and you (as prospective employee) when using cleaning agents. You would also impress them by asking them if they will be doing a basic COSHH training course for the successful candidate.

in advance of the interview, read up about COSHH - here is a summary:

COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, a UK law that requires employers to control substances hazardous to health to protect workers from ill health.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
What it is:
COSHH is a set of regulations designed to prevent or adequately control exposure to substances hazardous to health in the workplace.

What it covers:
The regulations cover a wide range of substances, including chemicals, dusts, fumes, mists, gases, biological agents, and naturally occurring substances.

Employer responsibilities:
Employers must assess the risks associated with hazardous substances, decide on necessary precautions, prevent or control exposure, ensure control measures are used and maintained, and provide information, instruction, and training to employees.

Hierarchy of control:
The regulations emphasize a hierarchy of control measures, starting with eliminating the hazard, then substituting with a safer alternative, followed by engineering controls, administrative controls, and finally, personal protective equipment (PPE) as a last resort.

Examples of hazardous substances:
Common examples include cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, pesticides, dusts from natural materials, fumes from welding, and biological agents like bacteria and fungi.

Why it's important:
Exposure to hazardous substances can lead to various health problems, including skin irritation, respiratory problems, and even cancer.

COSHH risk assessment:
Employers are required to carry out COSHH risk assessments to identify hazards, assess risks, and determine appropriate control measures.

COSHH Essentials:
HSE provides COSHH Essentials which offers basic advice on controlling exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace.

^COSHH training:
Training is essential for employees to understand the risks associated with hazardous substances and how to work safely.^

Where to find more information:
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website provides comprehensive guidance on COSHH regulations and best practices.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) - HSE

Provides information on the Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH). Using chemicals or other hazardous substances at work can put peoples health at risk.

I would also make it known that you are aware of gdpr and would know to be discreet with any confidential material or conversations you may hear.
