What would you do? Unhappy in new job

Hi everyone,

I was made redundant towards the end of last year, but I found a new job before Christmas. It’s not exactly what I would have gone for, but needed something the pay the bills. I’m a full time single parent, I’ve always worked but need flexibility. My last role was as fully remote which was great. This role is working from home 3 days a week, this was agreed prior to me starting.

I’ve been through intensive training for three months. But the company is chaotic and dysfunctional, including my immediate line manager. I’ve had doubts throughout the whole time I’ve been working there. Also a month into starting, the head of the department asked me and another person who started on the same day as me to come into the office 4 days a week until we were full trained which wasn’t agreed from the start.

The role is heavy on data analysis which I really don’t like. I’m more relationship management.

I don’t know what to do. In nearly 50, and feel I’d like to be in a job I really love. But the job market is so bad and the thought of starting again is awful 😬 But I really don’t see myself doing this role long term x

Sounds awful! Start looking for another job, always easier/better when you are already employed.

thank you x

I’m just scared about the job market, and worried about finding a new job which is even worse 😬

I definitely would not stay. All you can do is look for a new job. Good luck.

Thanks x

I would also recommend looking for a new job, the market is tough but assuming you’re on a 6 month probation period you should have a shorter notice period.

Be honest with recruiters about your circumstances, e.g was made redundant took the first opportunity due to market turmoil and it isn’t a good fit, as it’s more analytical v relationship building, 99% of recruiters will understand this and market you well, good luck OP. Probation periods are for you and the employer to make a decision on if it’s the right fit so don’t feel guilty either.

Thanks, I’m on a three month probationary period. This is coming to an end very soon 😬

I'd job hunt or do you think their is a chance of an internal transfer?

How long were you in your last job? You don't want a string of short term jobs on your CV.

Cherryblossom200 · 27/03/2025 19:09

Last job I was in for 2 1/2 years, my client moved somewhere cheaper and there wasn’t anything internally.

I’d love to move internally but I’d worry about how it would look 😬

Thanks, I’d consider a charity. But I need to earn a decent wage - over £40k and don’t think they would pay what I need or offer job stability. I was through to the last round for a charity role at the same time I was offered this job. I loved the charity role, but it was a one year contract and they were in deficit 😬 My role was brought into come up with fundraising ideas - which I would have loved!

If you're good at relationship management, high value individual fundraising might be a really good fit. Pay is usually decent as well for the sector.

Cherryblossom200 · 28/03/2025 06:31

Thank you. I’m a planner, project manager at heart but very good at relationship management. These are the things I enjoy, I’m not good at anything too heavy on data - it bores the life out of me 🤣
