Finally got a new job and now not sure if I should take it!

I've been lurking on this board for months as I've gone through almost a year of job hunting, numerous interviews and a number of rejections. Finally I've secured a new job but now feeling really unsure about it and wondering if I should trust my gut on this and stay where I am for a bit longer or if I need to be brave and make the jump??

Current job is fine, team great, about a 40 minute commute but is sometimes a bit too easy - I'm 46 and looking for a bit of a shift on in my career and this role has no progression at all.

New role - £15k more a year, bigger organisation, very different work environment - commute probably double now. It would be a good step up for me and take me to the next step in my career in probably 2-3 years time where I could be earning £20-40k more.

I've only got one child and he starts secondary school in September - I'd need to be in the office 3 days a week with some later evenings. We're wanting to remortgage and this higher salary would be useful for this process.

I'm now really doubting what I should do - for a year I've been desperate to leave and now the opportunity is here I just don't know if it's right. I'm worried that if I pass on this I'll regret it but if I do go and it's awful (commute/new area of work) then I could be stuck there for a while trying to find something else!

Any words of wisdom? My friends and family can't understand why I'm not jumping at this new role so not very helpful on this.

I think you've got to take it and try it.
You'll grow to resent your lack of ambition if you don't, now you're literally on the doorstep of something new.
And that's a lot more money to have too; think of all the life enhancing things you could do with it.

I made the move and it was a great decision. I hadn't realised how bored I was until I moved on. Yes, it's a longer commute but I'm so much more valued and have grown hugely in confidence. The extra money is not the main benefit although really nice to have! In 6 months time this new role would be your new comfort zone! If you get a good vibe go for it!

I think you’ve got to feel the fear and do it! I have a child of the same age, and moved job/role 18 months ago. I was coasting and didn’t feel valued.

Took on bigger role, decent increase in money and I’m found really well. It’s much harder, but I have lot of progression opps both sideways and upwards. I would take the leap, if it doesn’t work out, there will always by other options.

The commute sounds really long. It’s tough going doing a 1.5 hr commute a day. Doable, but tough.
