Bullying evidence - so much is verbal

I was told that within my employer line managers are advised not to have anything in writing so it cannot be used against them as evidence. Is this typical? That you email them and they ring back so the only evidence is the notes you make of the conversation? Feel the need to protect myself better as psychological safety ahs all fizzled out.

Similarly, return to work meetings after sick absence or special leave, I don't feel like I can argue my case when agreements have been backtracked and there is no written down evidence.

You can try taking notes during the conversation and then emailing the notes to your manager to get them to confirm them. Even if they choose not to respond it still indicates that the conversation took place and they offered no corrections

This. Follow up every verbal conversation with an email containing date, time and method of communication, who said what etc. State that the email is to confirm the details of the conversation. BCC every email to a secure email address as employers can delete work emails. Don't forward after sending because they can say that you edited.
