Redundancy working notice

Hi
I am being made redundant after just over 2 years. I’m getting very little statutory redundancy and they also want me to work my 2 month notice period.
Has anyone else been in this situation? I just don’t feel I have the energy to stay with them for that notice period and keep my mental health stable (which has taken a battering from them) . What would you do in this situation?

You can try and negotiate an earlier exit, but they don’t have to agree and you wouldn’t be entitled to be paid.

Or go off sick.

You have the right to reasonable time off to seek other work ... I'd be taking as much time off as possible

Isleofskyeaurora · 12/03/2025 13:00

What joyouspink said! Get looking for the jobs and say you need the time to prepare. I’ve been made redundant but put on gardening leave fortunately!

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 12/03/2025 13:22

don't forget any accrued holiday also as said above you must be given time to go to interviews for new jobs etc, as you might need a reference going sick with stress might not be helpful

HamSandwichKiller · 12/03/2025 13:39

Lots of places don't want to pay PILON as they need staff to stay in role until e.g. structures change and existing work is mapped to other teams. I'd work to rule, keep your head done and use work time to job hunt as much as possible. You have 2 months to build your network, jobs are often found via word of mouth or personal recommendation so let people know you're looking for a new job.

If you want the redundancy pay out then I would think you'll have to stay on their terms , if it's not worth having then hand your notice in assuming it's a shorter period & cut your losses ?

Thanks all for your advice, it’s good to get an outside perspective. They haven’t treated the team well for some time and only recently recruited to permanent roles shortly before this announcement - same role, same team. So them wanting to get the last bit of work from us despite some culpability here doesn’t surprise me tbh.

No advice - I’m currently working out 7 months notice after being made redundant and it’s awful! I’m trying to leave on time which doesn’t happen usually! Applying for jobs takes hours. Good luck.

Yes, it easy to say ‘work to the minimum’ but if this impacts customers or even colleagues …it’s more difficult to do.
I’ve heard that (in the UK) they have to give standard notice (start date / end date etc) and can’t refer to MH …I’ll check this though.

I had one week's notice and 11 weeks PILON, but I was okay with it. And that's not helpful to you.

I would spend the 2 months tweaking my CV, applying for jobs and doing any online training available and not working hard at my actual job role, but it depends on the role as how much flexibility you have.

Lots of companies do only give that kind of reference but the only legal requirement is that a reference is factual. They can give a bad reference as long as it's true. Most won't though as it's all just opinion.

If it's making you ill see your doctor and get signed off

cheekycee · 12/03/2025 18:22

Work your notice to get your red money but get signed off on the sick and look for work in the mean time. Good luck. Same thing has just happened to me.
