Supermarket weekend work

supermarketwork · 11/03/2025 16:34

I was offered and accepted a part time position in a supermarket last week .
18 hours , split over 3 shifts so perfect for my work / home life balance .
I have young children who are at school Monday to Friday & with their dad every other weekend .
Despite stating on my application I could only do a Saturday or Sunday every other weekend my rota includes a weekend day every weekend as apparently this is the expectation .
Now whilst I realise this is retail , I wasn't expecting this set up .
I pointed out that the expectation for 1 weekend shift also includes full time employees who work approximately double the hours I will be , so 1/3 of my week will be at weekend whilst 1/5 of theirs is .
I have been advised to speak to my manager , not met her yet but I don't want to be 'that person' .
Can anyone advise me if this is the norm?
I will of course turn down the job and look for something else , but I'm gutted as everything else just slotted in lovely !

Also to say I don't want to do 2 days on my weekend , not that they've said that's an option but it's my few hours of me time that I catch up with friends who work Monday to Friday .

I work in a supermarket and yes it is the norm. My hours are 20 hours spread over 5 days but mine is a specialist role.

Honestly I worked in retail many moons ago as a manager and I wouldn’t take on a part time worker that wouldn’t be able to work a weekend day every week. This is because you have to give full time staff 1 weekend off a month.

Look for a remote or hybrid admin role instead as that's more family friendly.

I've worked in retail previously and it was done on a percentage basis so unless you wanted more you worked 20% hours at a weekend .
I'm guessing there's going to be ' youngsters ' that want to or can only work weekends

As I said - my role was many moons ago. But I left after I had my first baby because they decided I needed to work one day every weekend I even offered to stop being a manager but they didn’t budge. Retail is not very family friendly and my experience is that they want you to work 1 day at the weekend because it’s their busiest and full time members get priority over time off at the weekend.

I work 18 hours per week in a supermarket over 3 days which includes every Saturday. Most of my colleagues work either a Saturday or Sunday as these are the busiest days. There is also a big push on at the moment in trying to get many of my colleagues to work at least one evening shift a week, this has been met by a lot of resistance as even those who do not have family responsibilities then do not want to work at a time when the teenage troublemakers and drunks come in or walk home late at night. Thankfully my role does not require evenings but I feel sorry for my colleagues who are having to do this.

Thankyou, that's really helpful.
So do the full timers still only have to do 1 weekend day also ?
That's my question I think , is it done where no matter what contractual hours are you have to do 1 weekend day ? Hopefully you see what I'm asking x

@FondantFancyFan
That job isn't suitable for
just anyone it's quite a skilled job and the money is crap.

I am talking of Sainsburys, other supermarkets may have different arrangements. It is not a firm rule that everyone has to work at the weekend and we all have our set contractual hours which stay the same each week but it is unusual for someone to be offered a contract that doesn't include at least one weekend shift.

Iloveeverycat · 12/03/2025 19:09

What were the advertised hours when you applied they normally state what the hours are and what days before you apply.

Iloveeverycat · 12/03/2025 19:14

Where I work in a local store most of the people that work during the week don't work weekends but they were advertised as that.

I filled in an availability sheet of paper and stated that I could work every other Saturday , but seems that’s either been missed or ignored .
I totally get I’m going to need to work weekends , it’s just every one that i object to

It’s quite a big recruitment drive so said various contracts available , including nights .
i had to fill in my availability at my induction after I’d already been given a job

When I was in retail everyone had to work a weekend day - it wasn’t optional.

Every week ? Where I’ve worked previously it was every other which I’m happy to do

Yes, every week. This was a while ago, but I still have friends who work there and they had to work either a Saturday or Sunday, every week.

You could maybe see if there was someone who wanted every other weekend off, and you could alternate full weekends?

It doesn’t matter what you previously did, if what you are expected to do is every weekend then you either do every weekend or turn the role down because you do t want to do it. You could speak to your manager but they will more than likely want someone to do a weekend day because if you don’t someone has to cover

MyDeepPlayer · 15/03/2025 13:58

I worked retail for 9 years and everyone including all managers including overall store manager had to work either Saturday or Sunday. Occasionally managers could get a whole weekend off if they worked the night on Friday into Saturday morning ie 10pm Friday until 6am Saturday
