Dad was an engineer.

Mum sang in a band before marriage, worked in a bank and then local council. She stopped paid work when pregnant with me 40+ yrs ago.

rosydreams · 10/03/2025 19:39

i know my mother was a housekeeper ,then owned a small shop at some point ,a healthworker and a nanny

my dad all i can recall was a mechanic but he had studied something to do with ecology at uni

Ddakji · 10/03/2025 19:42

Surely most people know what their parents did/do?

TickingAlongNicely · 10/03/2025 19:47

Civil servants was the main one. I know some of the departments/buildings they worked in

My dad worked at what is now part of the Natural History Museum before that (National geology museum I think?).

And I know both the hotel and petrol station my mum worked in a teenager as she told me when I visited the island on holiday.

MissyB1 · 10/03/2025 19:48

My mum came to England from Ireland to join the WAAF in the second world war. After the war she did admin work for an electrical company.
After having us six kids she finally got back to work as admin in the NHS.

Dad worked in a munitions factory in the war. Then office clerk in the electrical factory where mum was, hence the marriage. He remained there until he retired.

OMG, your dad worked at The Geological Museum!
He was super cool!
So envious!

NewYearNewDietAgain · 10/03/2025 21:04

Secretary and postman.

holidayblues25 · 10/03/2025 21:06

DM was a history lecturer, my DF was a lawyer that read philosophy and literature at uni, but decided to be a hotelier in the end.

CatsWhiskerz · 10/03/2025 21:09

Mum was a scientist and dad trained as a chef but his career changed direction to director level in insurance - both deceased now

KingscoteStaff · 10/03/2025 21:12

Scientist + lawyer

InigoJollifant · 10/03/2025 21:12

Dad worked in an insurance office for a year before becoming a doctor. Not sure he ever had much of a summer job or anything while he was studying, never heard stories about that.

Mum worked in an old folks home, for a local council, for the OU, for grassroots legal advice organisations, the CAB, and finally Macmillan.

she spent a period of time on the dole in the 70s ‘because there were more important things to do than work’.

GreatTheCat · 10/03/2025 21:12

My parents? Yes of course.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/03/2025 21:25

Mum was very briefly (one year) a teacher, then worked in a chemistry lab. Stopped work when she had us kids and made pocket money by sewing clothes for people.

Dad worked as a butcher's delivery boy as a teen, then trained to be a health inspector.

I'm not sure my kids could reel off all the jobs I've done when it comes to the ones I did after school/then before and during uni to be fair.

Not necessarily. My children could tell you what I do now, but not every one of the many many jobs I've had, of even half of them

CarpetKnees · 10/03/2025 23:53

I'm a bit confused by the question.

Surely most of us will be aware what our parents do / did for a living ?

HeddaGarbled · 11/03/2025 00:08

Mum: Littlewood’s pools coupon checker; aircraft parts telephone orderer; sales assistant in a music shop; owned her own playgroup; primary school classroom assistant

Dad: RAF ground crew; civilian aircraft electrician; music studio equipment engineer; draftsman; quality control engineer at a rubber extrusion manufacturer

Eclectic 😃

Negroany · 11/03/2025 00:17

I'm pretty sure I can't name all the jobs they had, but here's a few:

Dad: did national service; greengrocer; airplane factory (not sure what he did, riveting or something); trades union official.

Mum: nurse; playgroup organiser; community centre manager; ran a YTS thing; ran an AIDS response service; doctor receptionist; teaching assistant; local councillor. Library volunteer. I think that's it.

My nan was a servant, then later a cleaner/housekeeper and took in ironing.

Grandad was in the navy, then a coalman, then a warehouse manager I think.

Nourishinghandcream · 11/03/2025 00:25

Ddad worked for the GPO for his whole working life apart from 2yrs national service.
Dmum worked for the tax office and was then a self employed music teacher.

Their work ethic rubbed off on me and I had just 2-jobs over my working life.

WellsAndThistles · 11/03/2025 00:30

Why? Always wonder what these are phishing for.....

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/03/2025 01:00

Dad was a Chief Officer in the Council and that was the job he had before I was born up to retirement (did over 40 years).

Mum was a legal secretary, only job I know her having.

The both retired 30 years ago.

Tumblingthrough · 11/03/2025 05:33

Yes I know all the jobs they had over the years.
