You can't work from home and look after a child, if that's what you're thinking

MichaelandKirk · 09/03/2025 19:03

definitely you cannot look after a child and work at the same time

Seasonofthesticks · 09/03/2025 19:04

Some kind of creative self employed business perhaps?

You can't work from home and look after a child. What about something where you're paid for a particular task. Could you take in ironing? Could you look after another child too?

OP hasn’t said she wants to work from home whilst looking after a child. Having a special needs child though often means no wraparound care so limits a lot of office-based jobs.

OP lots of civil service jobs can be worked remotely if you are a carer.

I'd suggest exploring work-from-home jobs on platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, etc. Look for clients that allows you to work flexible hours so you can still balance work with caring for your child. Honestly, working while looking after a child isn’t easy at all — but it can be done 🙂

If your council repeatedly mandate unlawful actions regarding your child's education, resulting in you having to give up work like mine have, you have my full sympathy. There are not enough swear words in existence to accurately describe them.

I'm taking some time to recover, as the stress of battling the council has absolutely floored me and my physical and mental health. But keeping an eye on 'The work from home hub'. Also considering doing opposite patterns to my DH, so maybe bar work evenings/weekends when he's home.

You might find it helpful to look at some crowd-sourced or task-based platforms that offer remote work.

They tend to be more flexible and let you choose when and how much you take on, which can make things a bit more manageable alongside caring responsibilities.
