About to be made redundant with just less than 2 years service

Hi. As the title says I fear that I will be made redundant this week which will be just over a month before I reach 2 years continuous service. There is a large restructure taking place and I've been excluded from project meetings for the last month or so and my boss has been distant with me. Given that my notice period will end a few days before I reach 2 years my understanding is that I won't be entitled to any redundancy at all, which is annoying! I'm obviously applying for new jobs but the market is very tough at the moment and I am nearing 50 and also main carer for a disabled child so not able to work full time. Would be very grateful for any advice re what to ask in meeting and also when looking for new roles. Thanks in advance!

Hi have they had you at a consultation meeting? If you’re in the uk you need to be consulted first. I’ve just been made redundant too so they had to consult first to see how they could avoid it. It may take you over your 2 years by the time all That happened. After my notice period I would have been there 3 years shy of but they classed it as 3 years instead of 2. Does your place enhance it?

They may not need to consult with you at all if you have less than two years service. They could pay you in lieu of notice too, to shorten it further.

You need 1 year and 51 weeks service to have standard unfair dismissal protection - are you near that yet?

What kind of role would you be looking for if the worst happens?

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I'm about 5 weeks off 2 years continuous service.with 1 month notice period so I don't think there is much I can do. Looking for new role in IT/Finance but they are nearly all full-time and there seems to be a lot of competition for every role at the moment. Hopefully things will turn around in the job market at some point!
