No contract - but handed in notice

I’ve got a great job opportunity that I was offered. The new company sent over the job offer and contract which I signed then resigned from current position, only to realise (stupidly I know) that my notice period was longer than I had thought. My contract had changed last year and during a particularly stressful time I must have forgotten the notice period change.

terrified I’d lose the opportunity and be out on my arse with no job, I spoke with them to apologise and explain. After a couple of days of waiting they mention they would be willing to wait longer for me and that they would send the updated contract over the very next day. Now I’ve had to follow up with them a few times to ask if they had any updates (about recruitment process, about their decision if they would wait for me etc) and I have still not received the updated contract, I don’t want to seem too pushy and message them again to ask but my anxiety is not great sitting waiting. It’s been three days since they said they’d send it through. Now I know they can rescind an offer even after submitting the contract but having that signed just makes things seem a little more official.

AIBU in worrying? Should I reach out or just be patient? Something im clearly not as good at as I first thought?!

In your position, I probably would have just reduced the notice period I worked at the current role.

It isn't ideal, but you have to look out for yourself first.

I have reduced my noticed period and will be using all my accrued holidays to shorten it further. New employer was adamant they wanted an ethical employee who wouldn’t leave their existing employer in the lurch, so if I did that they wouldn’t really see me as the ideal candidate for them.

my question was more on should I follow up to get the updated contract or just sit tight?

I'd follow it up...

Sorry to say it but you are stuffed.
You are leaving your current job.
So did you agree to the new notice period in writing or was it a change of policy?

And how long is the extra time?

Because if they needed someone in the role by X date and you can only do Y they have to go with their second choice if that person is still available.
However they have approved the timing change so I would put the delay down to someone in the HR chain not being available and would give them a day or two to come back to you.

If you went via an agency I would firstly be asking them if they could check as the agency has a financial interest in billing the new company.
