I'll be the last to meet the new manager tomorrow. We have 2 offices and have assigned bases and are paid to travel to the other office (time and tickets). The main office where all the managers are and my base which is favoured by all, which managers rarely visit. I work 3 days sort of in a job share with a colleague based in the main office. As the new manager has spoken to all except me 3 have already asked to change their base to the preferred office. In the past people have been rostered in different offices based on business needs. Since the new year/manager I feel people have cherry picked where they work and have a feeling I will be asked to change base if I want to keep to my existing part time days. The issue is that my 'job share' and I alternate days as it suits us both. I can't decide how to play the meeting? Stick to my base (close to home, where my best friend works) or accept a change of base to keep my working days but I then I will have to pay to travel in my own time.

They can’t just change your contract on a whim op

Shedoesasshepleases · 06/03/2025 08:40

It's in the contract that you have to work at other offices. I just feel shafted by the others who got in before me. Particularly a new person who took the job based at the 'managers office' and just seems to get what would have been my shifts at the more laid back office. The new manager struggles with the roster and seems to be trying to please everyone. I just can't decide what is more important to me, which days I work or where I work?

That depends on the terms. The OP seems to suggest that the days are relatively flexible anyway "alternating dates as it suits them".

In the end, the employer could decide that the OP's current terms do not suit their business needs and make the role redundant, so it is going to take negotitation and compromise - assuming that the manager does want to change things (which we don't know for definite).

Thanks for replies. We have fixed but alternating days between us I work Wednesday every other week, colleague works the other Wednesday. We are both the oldest and have been there the longest just to throw that in the mix.

I can’t imagine how that kind of contract would even be worded

you will work the days we prescribe and they can be changed as and when

So if this is in your contract
then they can’t just decide to change it

@Shedoesasshepleases I think you have a further option. In the event that you are effectively penalised on the basis of being last in the queue, you should point it out to the new manager. Personally, I would probably go along the lines of "I'm sure this wasn't the intention, however the circumstances have brought about an unfair situation, tas such, I suggest we rethink as neither of the options work for me. Happy to be flexible, but everyone should be fairly treated".

Something like that.

Shedoesasshepleases · 06/03/2025 13:00

I guess they can change location by stealth always rostering me at the main office. I would get my fare paid and time in lieu? I just don't want to!!!

Sounds like the location is more important you than the days, so I would prioritise that. @HappiestSleeping makes a good suggestion for how to approach it. You could also say 'We'll all have to compromise on something so for me it'll be changing my days if needs be. What is New Person able to compromise on?'

Being the oldest makes no difference though.

Shedoesasshepleases · 06/03/2025 13:16

I think that is just it. What do I want most where or which days? New person was employed to work in main office but she lives close to other office (as do I) and is rostered there whilst I'm sent to main office. She's not the compromising type Me Me Me!

No but if you put it that way to manager, and they are the type who likes to be fair, they might realise that New Person shouldn't just get her way. Suggest you alternate the further away office, she does one week then you do?

My contract doesn't state location or set hours. I work at a university, I am contracted to work 36 hours a week but our teaching day runs from 830 to 1830 and we can be timetabled to teach at any time within that. So some days can be a 9-10 hour days but others will be shorter.

I also work across different campuses within 1 city and can be sent to another campus 2 hours away aswell. The site of our work is not specified within our contract.

Not all contracts have the details you presume they have.

I think this is the perfect response, makes you sound like you are being as reasonable and compromising as possible.

Asuch as the other person may be a me me me person don't phrasebook like that as it makes you come across as unreasonable.

The op is part time and also a job share
so in this scenario it is important that the contract does go in to more detail re working days and hours.
whereas when you’re on a full time working week…. It’s different

Thank you for this idea @HappiestSleeping that is just it, everyone else has had their say and the new manager is trying to please.
