Help me choose a job!

A bit of background, I haven’t been happy at work recently, due to being promised a promotion that was then given to someone else. I am worried this has clouded my judgment, as I applied for new jobs in a huff! So I now want help to choose.

Job 1:

  • Flexible with swapping days off when needed
  • Higher salary currently
  • Little/no progression opportunities
  • Good company benefits eg pension
  • Has no ties to my degree
  • Co-workers are at times lazy and get away with it
  • Same days off as partner
  • Annual bonus

Job 2:

  • Opportunity for a proper career rather than just a job
  • Lower salary to begin with (but will eventually surpass other job)
  • A new field utilising my degree
  • Slightly worse pension but better holidays
  • Pushes progression with most people at the firm having worked their way up (any costs for this covered by them)
  • Extra costs for the commute
  • Different days off than partner

If anyone wants me to expand on anything let me know! Please help!

You were originally going for a promotion OP; do you genuinely feel you would be happy in a stagnant, non-progressive environment which fosters a culture of laziness? I'd go for the role which encourages growth.

I would pick job 1.

Option 2 best by a mile. Proper career, and you can top up your pension yourself if need be.

Option 1 sounds like a dead end. Lazy co-workers says it all. Never choose a job based on convenience re boyfriend.

I really appreciate this advice, thank you, and I think ultimately you’re right I won’t be happy here! I think if I don’t go for it i’ll end up bitter, I’m just nervous to jump ship as I’ve been here a long time!

Is there any reason you think job 1 is the better option?

I think you’re right, I’m just worried as it’s initially lower salary that it’ll be harder to save and top up pensions etc
