Hi all,

I have been offered a place on the fast stream programme.

I am a current civil servant and was wondering about the PEC(Pre employment checks).

I have been in my current role for nearly 2 years but I did take a part time job for 6 months to make ends meet.

I didnt declare this to my current employer so i'm unsure if they will find out about this?

Also, how far back do they go into your employmeny history? Is it 5 years or more?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I have been accepted onto the Digital Scheme.

However, I read that the vetting involves checking with HMRC to confirm employment records.

With any level of civil service vetting you need to answer whatever is asked fully and truthfully.

So initially I wondered why you thought having a second job would be an issue but I’ve just reread your post and seen that you’re a current civil servant. This could be a problem for you, because as a civil servant you are usually required to declare and get permission for any outside employment. Your specific department will have a policy on the intranet. The job itself is unlikely to be an issue unless it was a conflict of interest (eg you worked for a company that’s a stakeholder for you in your government role) but the fact you didn’t declare it is not good.

When you go through vetting, they will check HMRC records and they will find details of this other job. I can only advise you to be completely honest on any vetting forms. I would also advise you to read your department’s policy on second jobs.

Did the HMRC know about the second job or was in cash in hand? If it all happened off the books you might as well just stay quiet. If not, then you need to be open as this will come out.

Was the nature of the role any sort of issue? If it was, eg, bar work you should have declared it and got permission but in all likelihood it would have been signed off and coming clean asap with an apology is all you can do and hope people are gentle. If the role was something you may not have got permission for it’s more problematic - eg I once had a team member who had taken on a second job which could affect their professional credibility without telling us, and that did end with them leaving.

It was a temporary customer service role, with an agency, that started outside my civil service job hours.

I don't work for HMRC.

I was asking if fast stream vetting will just confirm my existing employment with CS and pre employment (which the CS already have a record of).

So you need to check the policy of your current dept and come clean asap about having had an ‘unauthorised’ second job.

People are mentioning HMRC because they hold the records of your past employment, not because they think you work there. If you were paid for that job by PAYE then there will be a record.

What they check will depend on the level of vetting you are going through but they may check your employment records with HMRC.

It doesn’t matter that it was outside your civil service hours. You should have declared it.

You seem to be having trouble understanding the fairly basic points people are making. Please reread the advice in my other post.

NotMyDayJob · 02/03/2025 22:06

The HMRC reference is because they check your tax records, to verify your employment. For eg when I joined the civil service I didn’t give any referees, because I couldn’t give them before a formal offer and PECs are done after the provisional offer and before formal offer, and the agency I joined said they would verify my employment history via my tax records.

Notverygoodatusernames · 02/03/2025 22:08

To repeat: I advise you to be completely honest on any vetting forms. I would also advise you to read your department’s policy on second jobs.
