Which job should I choose

Hello name changed for this and details as brief as they can be as outing.

I'm a health care professional. Been offered 2 jobs, one in private practice, one in NHS. Both part time.

Private job pros:

A band increase

Clinical area I'm really excited about. Scope for more specialist training which I'm also excited about.

Hybrid working but days not set in stone - eg some days I would need to be more patient facing more than others it would just depend

Potential bonuses although no idea how that works

Lovely physical working environment

Cons:

I'm new to this role so would need a bit of training and hand holding at first.

Bit of a commute but see above re part time/hybrid

Only statutory benefits - pension, sick etc.

No scope at the moment to increase or change hours

NHS job:

Pros: local job

Not as exciting clinically but an area I'm familiar with

Pension, sick pay, security all associated with NHS

Not technically hybrid but I've been told I can do some bits from home - I can plan my diary and it seems quite flexible

Probably more scope for changing hours etc eventually as it's within NHS

Cons: a band below the first job - no further progression unless I get promoted and I've been feeling stuck on my band a while now!

It's a service which is heavily impacted by waiting lists and service pressures - I also think the nature of the role will mean it is potentially more stressful at times

It's in a clinical area I'm comfortable with but I wouldn't say as excited about as the other

Both teams seem lovely annoyingly!

I think my heart is saying the private one but my head is saying NHS.

You can buy various sick pay cover too so that can be £ amount from an insurance broker.

I’d give it a go, it’s not forever unless you want it to be.

I took a chance a few years ago and went for a promotion I really wasn’t sure I wanted. I learned so much and gained a lot of confidence but it wasn’t for me in the long term. It did give me the confidence though to step away from inpatient nursing where I’d spent more than 20 years though and I now work in a completely different area of nursing so no regrets.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Go for the private sector one. It excites you and you cannot put a price on that. You will feel more alive, you will grow and learn. You are still young, take that step up to the bigger life that expands your horizons.

I think I will do that, though I have a couple of pre-existing conditions so am guessing it might exclude a bit/be pricey

I've actually done similar in past before I trained as an AHP and it put me off doing it again as I remembered the last time a job excited me and it wasn't for me long term - but - you're right in hindsight I'm still glad I did it as it opened up other doors for me, provided excellent training and made me realise what s*t I was and wasn't willing to put up with in a job 😂

Oh thank you for saying I'm still young - I feel ancient & keep panicking that I should have my shit well and truly together by now not still contemplating career moves 😂😂

It is true @GabbyGabby15, we learn so much and gain even if the job doesn’t work out!

I think I enjoy my new job so much because of how shit the old one was. I dropped a band from 7 to 6 but with enhancements for weekend and night working in my new job, I’m getting paid more for so much less stress which I love.

Go with your gut. You definitely are still young enough to try something different!

I really wish my gut told me one thing only and didn't argue with itself 😅
