Can you name everywhere you have worked since leaving education and the exact dates? Job application asking for this.

I applied for a part time job, nothing exciting, minimum wage. I am a carer for disabled child/adult but wanted a job to fit around her. I got through the interview process but the amount of information and references they need seems a bit OTT. They asked for all my work places, dates I started, date I left and the reason why. I trained to work in an industry where it’s common not to stay in one place long so I have had quite a few jobs in the past 25 years plus a gap to have dc and care for dd. They are now trying to contact the very first place I worked 25 years ago to conform I worked for them…the place is a pub and has changed hands many times in the past 25 years, they can’t find my details. I have given 2 places I have worked for references as well as a personal reference but apparently that’s not good enough. Is this normal practice? The jobs 12 hours a week.

Im wondering if it’s just me that has disorganised brain but should I be able to remember everywhere I have worked, when I started and left?

Ok, I may have missed this. References from every single place you've worked is not a normal requirement! Are you sure you've understood them correctly! Usually it's just two references with at least one from your last job.

They wanted references from 3 years ago which I have given also academic references as I was studying. They also want regulated references e.g worked in education or care which I have given. Except I’m unable to get references from my domiciliary work back in 2013/2014 as they said it’s been over 11 years.

My employment history has been provided by HMRC and they want references from all of those companies as well as regulated industries.

I have never had to do this before for a care job. All they asked before was employment history and your current and past employment and any gaps just explain whether you was unemployed, looking for work etc.

Am I in the minority who finds it odd that so many people can't do that? Aren't you supposed to have a CV when you are applying for job - so you simply update it every time you are looking for a new job?

I have a LinkedIn profile that has all the dates and brief description of everywhere I worked since graduating over 20 years ago. But maybe its different when you are a professional.

I’m exactly the same. Takes me 2 mins to look back at prior job applications, endless editions of CV’s going back 23 years. They all live (via the cloud) on my laptop.

I’m not starting from zero every time I apply for a job. I look back at what I did last time and revise it.

Yes, ish, because I have it all on historic CVs, but I just put 1st / 31st where I've only saved months.

Presumably this is a job in education or similar. They have to do all this for Safer Recruitment, part of Safeguarding and it's an even bigger pain for them. Where there are gaps they have to put a risk assessment in place, to show that they tried, and the reasons they don't have all the information check out.

I had a couple of jobs where I never returned after the first break. Don't remember their names. This was 2001 and 2003

Had a 8 months doing temp work back in 2007 and I cannot remember the order I did the assignments or how long. I have put this on my CV as "various temping roles" then bullet pointed three main jobs - admin work, outbound calls to customers to review their call with certain companies and data entry

If you include every single job like that, your CV will be more than 2 pages and potential employers will see it goes over 2 pages and reject it.

I didn't have a CV for many years. Then I decided to do one about 16 months ago when the store manager was starting to bully me.

I probably could but not exact dates. I don't think organisations are supposed to keep ex staff records longer than 7(?) years anyway, so their search is fruitless. Very weird

Depends on the field. Education is usually application forms because they do want so much detail.

Yes it's different.

I didn't do my first "professional" job until I moved to a big city in my late twenties. Before that, in the small coastal town I grew up in, there was only a load of seasonal, casual, minimum wage, short term contract jobs. No CVs required for those, there was usually just a short application form and a 10 min interview, then "can you start tonight?"

Those jobs aren't relevant to my professional career so I don't mention them at all on an application, or I cover that whole period of my life with a short sentence something like "1990-1995: Employment in Retail and Hospitality sectors" and I have never been asked for more detail than that.

All these years later I have forgotten which years I was at which job, definitely can't remember the months 😂

I can - ish, I have updated my CV every few years and have had to provide a full work history and explain any gaps because I worked with vulnerable people when a DBS became mandatory in social care. I think that was around 20(?) years ago now, I suppose tax records might show where I worked, but if a potential employer were trying to verify by speaking to someone then they'd not be able to because at least 3 have died, some businesses closed and some buildings demolished or repurposed, one I believe burned down.

Seems a bit mad to go to that extent - that's what the DBS was brought in for isn't it?

I've only worked at 3 places. I'd need to check payslips for exact start and end dates though. Luckily I have kept all payslips since 1985.

I only put down jobs I done since qualifying - so nothing while I was still at Uni or immediately after that. My first job on my CV is my first professional job.

I also dont find it that difficult because I only had 6 jobs in almost 30 years.

Because I haven't needed to clear space. All my stuff is filed per tax year and we have a big loft.
We're actually having a clear out so it might go in the next year

As long as you have the P60 for the year you do not need all the payslips.

Yes I know.

But.

I currently have better things to do with my time than go to boxes stored under the eaves and weed them. I currently have more space than time. Which is why I, personally, still have old pay slips, bank statements etc.
