Hey all,

Can someone please clarify what these jobs are and what they entail? I'm slightly confused... it doesn't take much.

I understand digital marketing to an extent, but not to sure what freelancing actually is in terms of the work you do etc.

I really want to get into the digital world to try and allow me to work anywhere worldwide, to give me and my family more opportunities. I know eamtsy have alot of people who sell digital downloads etc, that people buy. Can this make good money?

I am keen to learn more about other roles that can give me the above, I'm just not 100% sure on what they are, so anyone with experience who does this or knows what it all entails, please share your thoughts

I would need something that would give me a decent income, anything above 20k per annjm would be ok.

Any advise welcome.

Freelancing is basically doing work for companies whilst being self employed - normally short term projects. It can be super lucrative depending on your skillset, but stuff like basic admin normally pays under £5 an hour because the competition is high and there are plenty in countries with lower salaries happy to pick up these jobs. I do some freelancing on the side but it's highly technical (think writing contracts/consulting on building HR policies) and pays over £100 an hour...

Digital marketing and digital products is a hugely saturated market right now. It makes you money if you have a big social media following or know how to build one quickly, but in a world where so many people are trying to do it you really need to have a unique spin on life or really niche skills to try and sell on.

Freelancer - you need to be bold with your fee, as there's always somebody cheaper (but not necessarily as good!) and strict with your boundaries - especially if you're looking at digital marketing... which is sucking the life out of me one hour at a time 😂

As people have said above, everyone thinks they can do it, which not only impacts your rate, but also everyone expects to be 'viral' within about 24 hours. I am awful at boundaries, and even though I've freelanced for years and years (about 16) I've had enough, it's got so bad that I'm looking for a job that I can go to, and leave at the door on my way out. Even if it pays less.

It's one of those tricky trades that looks easy but is actually very hard to do well. Like social media, photography, journalism and PR, everyone thinks they can do it, so no one pays well for it.

I'd swerve digital marketing tbh.

You need to be able to constantly stay up to date. What is the best practice soon becomes penalised and as a free lancer you need to be able to stay on top of this.

Tech and social media companies constantly change algorithms and alter how reach works. So you have to spend a lot of time relearning and adapting. Strong maths and excel skills are really important.

There are so many other 'digital' tech jobs that don't involve quite so much learning and adapting. All tech tends to require this but not at the pace set by social media giants.
