Etiquette in new job

GentleMember · 21/02/2025 00:54

Starting a new job and my company have said to contribute any new ideas to how documents are presented, etc.
Tbh, I honestly don't see a problem with the existing format but feel it won't be welcomed well for a new hire trying to change how things were always done.
What are your thoughts?

If it ain't broke don't fix it is my mantra. I worked in a place that was quite chaotic and had a new Manager. He tried to change things to ways we'd already tried but he wouldn't listen. Couple months later, we reverted back to the old system. The chaos the "new but old" system took several weeks to sort out.

Give it time but a good start can sometimes be a more contemporary font?

Give that feedback. Say they look okay to you. Ask why they want to change it. Are people having difficulty finding docs? Do they need more details? Are they trying to address a particular problem, or is it just new person, fresh eyes?

I'm 2.5 months into a new job, and I've already updated the doc template, been through every doc to make sure they are using the doc numbering and so on consistently and written better instructions on using the template (a colleague was being positive about it today; he wrote its predecessor.) But documentation is my thing, and it isn't for most techies, so they're all happy.

How accessible are the documents? Is that an angle you could pursue?

coxesorangepippin · 21/02/2025 01:43

What bamamma said

I'd go with accessiblity rather than looks

Are they on a shared drive for example

cinnamonbunfight · 21/02/2025 09:34

They might have meant accessibility in terms of how well they work for people with different disabilities and impairments, not how easy they are to find

JoyousPinkPeer · 21/02/2025 10:44

I always said to new staff ... if you think we can change things and make things better just say so ... I don't have all the answers and fresh input is a good thing. Might not always agree to change, but do feel free to make any suggestions.

Thanks, yes, I did mean accessibility for different disabilities and impairments, but ease of access is important in both senses.
