Sick leave, shifts for, unwell DH

Does anyone have any advice please? DH works shifts in a v manual job. He has some heart related issues but now also has what I think is a rheum condition. He is in loads of pain, fatigue, poor sleep and really cannot do his v manual job atm due to pain etc. He is not one to moan so I know it is not good.

We have exhausted the GP (not hugely helpful) and have sorted a private consult in a few weeks. We don't have private insurance but at least a heads up what is going on hopefully.

The issue is his work. He has spoken to his boss who is just unhelpful and won't commit to letting him do later shifts (he cannot do early shifts as he cannot even put his shoes on let alone do heavy lifting). It's up to his boss whether he gets paid if off sick. If he cannot do only late shifts until things improve at least then he cannot work. But, I worry that if he takes multiple days off (not consecutively) then this is worse than a period off work as more incidents. He's been off for two random days already since Jan and that is so unlike him.

Sorry this is long, Any thoughts? Neither of us are take time off people at all but this is not great at all (short term at least).

I think he will need to take time off and settle for statutory sick pay if his work are resistant to pay it. He doesn't sound well enough to be at work. What else could he do? A very manual job doesn't seem like the future for him. How old roughly is he?

discdiscsnap · 19/02/2025 21:36

Sounds like he needs a different job. Could he qualify for pip? He can still work but maybe reduce his hours/do a different role.

Thanks @PullTheBricksDown , I think he needs to be off too if I am honest. They won't even meet him half way.

He is mid 50s. I agree re a future in this job too. I have raised this many times. He is not great at dealing with any of this shall we say.

Thanks @discdiscsnap , I wondered that too. I am working on trying to get him to think more broadly other jobs. He wants to work, I just don't think this job is a long term future. Obv longer term things may improve (if we cna figure out what is going on) but even then, I think it is not a forever job.

If he regularly isn’t able to work I would go off sick 1 incidence of sickness is viewed differently to multiple incidences .

I have had to have some time off sick due to a health issue . Work have been amazing on phased return . Have adjusted my start times .. some employers are better than others.

Fitnote statng he cannot start work before x time, needs breaks etc. if the job is manual what is the risk assessment for his condition?

purplepandas · 19/02/2025 22:34

Thanks all. There will be no risk assessment @LIZS . And yep @Starlightstarbright4 , my employer would be tons better too like yours. His is not sadly.

Sorry to hear his condition is making work difficult. Worth checking if the Disability Employment Adviser at your local Jobcentre can help him.

Thank you @LadyLapsang
