Interview tomorrow - STAR method

Hi all,

Would really appreciate advice and wisdom. Have an interview for a fantastic role tomorrow - public sector on the arts/culture side. It's a bit of a side step for me and I imagine that I'll be competing against more experienced candidates.

They've told me the interview questions will use the STAR method. I have a terrible tendency to go blank when I'm nervous so I want to prepare as far as possible!

I have a list of essential and desirable criteria. It's a fairly senior role that involves a lot of communicating with external stakeholders and relationship building.

Using STAR in the past has felt quite straightforward - leadership/problem solving/team work - but I have a feeling this will be more geared to the criteria. Can anyone advise on how they might frame their questions?! Thanks so much.

How did the interview go @Fitzcarraldo353 ? Really hope it was great.

I still haven’t heard anything back from the interview I had last week! 😓 I’m pretty confused after all the questions about whether the salary was ok for me, and when I could start/what summer holidays I had booked. It didn’t feel ‘off the page’ either.

They said I’d hear about a second interview early this week so it makes me think it’s not going to go my way…but onwards!

Aw that's rubbish @yellowpetals I hate the waiting!! It's so stressful. Fingers crossed they're just taking longer than expected but it ain't over til it's over.

Mine went well, thanks for asking. I delivered the presentation how I wanted and could answer all their follow up questions well I think. Then they seemed to respond positively to my answers to the other questions. I should hear today if I'm through to next round as they want to do 2nd interviews on Tuesday. And then I've that other interview on Wednesday.

I'll pop back on and update later. Do let me know when you hear too.

Oooh that sounds really promising @Fitzcarraldo353 - well done! Keeping everything crossed for you.

I’m not holding my breath for my lot now - but I do feel really confused by it tbh. My instincts with interviews have always been right in the past, and i came out of this one pretty certain I’d be called for a second. I guess it’s totally possible they saw someone much better for the role after they saw me…but yes, the waiting is painful!

Very much hope you hear good news today - it sounds so positive 🤗

I've got a 2nd interview @yellowpetals! Looks like they've taken 4 people through. It's in person on Tuesday.

Hoping you get some news today too.

yellowpetals · 21/02/2025 14:10

That's brilliant @Fitzcarraldo353 . Fantastic news! Great that you have not just the weekend to prepare, but Monday too (if you have kids at school you'll have a quiet day to focus once they're back after half term!)

I STILL haven't heard anything on mine 😡- all a bit weird! In the past I've had both good news and bad news on work related matters last thing on a Friday afternoon, so I'm wondering if I might get an email in the next few hours 😂...but if I don't hear anything by Monday afternoon, I might drop the HR recruiter a polite line....

@Fitzcarraldo353 - so after all that, I HAVE been called to a second interview, week after next. Hurrah! Let us know how you get on with yours next week - and have a lovely weekend x

Yay @yellowpetals That's awesome news. Yay us.

@Fitzcarraldo353 - have been thinking of you, how did your interview go?!

OP posts:
Fitzcarraldo353 · 27/02/2025 14:32

Thanks @yellowpetals !

It went well I think. Felt like I got across everything I wanted to and had good examples of what they asked for. That was on Tuesday and they said they'd let me know by the end of the week but since all interviews were on Tuesday I hoped I'd hear sooner rather than later. Nothing yet though.

I had a different interview yesterday which I don't think went as well. Just didn't feel like my stories came out right or I was too vague - eve though they're well rehearsed stories by now! They said they'd let me know if I was through to 2nd round today so sitting here (im) patiently waiting.

How's prep going for your next round?

yellowpetals · 27/02/2025 16:45

@Fitzcarraldo353 - ooooh that sounds exciting for the interview on Tuesday - well done! It sounds like it went brilliantly. Don't lose heart you haven't heard anything yet - remember I was fretting a lot after my last interviewer told me I would hear about a second 'early next week'... and then I heard zilch until the Friday 🙄

Do you want that role more than the other one you went for yesterday? Funny how we just have an instinct for when an interview doesn't go quite so well.

My prep is going okay thank you, though I have various other work getting in my way (will need to prep more over the weekend) and feel nervous about it! x

Didn't get either of the jobs I inter for @yellowpetals

Hope you have better luck next week!

yellowpetals · 28/02/2025 19:50

Oh no @Fitzcarraldo353 ! Sorry to hear this. Try not to get too downhearted. Give yourself the weekend to relax and enjoy yourself - and start afresh with your search on Monday. Better roles will come your way xxxx

Fitzcarraldo353 · 08/03/2025 19:03

How did it go for you @yellowpetals? I was thinking of you this week but wasn't sure what day the interview was.

yellowpetals · 09/03/2025 09:19

@Fitzcarraldo353 - ah, thanks for asking. It was ok, although I was pretty nervous during the presentation which wasn’t great.

I haven’t had the outcome yet, but unfortunately I am very sure the job isn’t mine. A few things they said make me think there are better qualified candidates, and there simply wasn’t the sense of warmth and interest from them as there was at the end of the first interview 😓

But onwards! It’s all good practice and I have another interview next week for a role that could be a better fit. Trying to stay positive but finding it all frustrating and exhausting tbh! How are you doing? X

Fitzcarraldo353 · 26/03/2025 16:05

@yellowpetals thinking of you and wondering what the final outcome of this one was for you?

I had a pretty low two weeks after that round but am back applying again. Had an interview this morning and have 3 other applications to submit in next two weeks. Exhausting but I'll keep at it!

Thatcat · 26/03/2025 16:17

Apologies, my post was too late.
best of luck with outcome
