What happens to unused hours of holiday

Hellohelloworld · 11/02/2025 23:37

So this is got 12 hours left on my holidays until the end of march. But i haven't got a way to use them my job didn't say nothing about them. So what will happen to them? I'm in a contract.
the new leave year will start in april and i don't want to lose that, what i was thinking was, could they just pay me that money extra without me taking the holiday?

it will be written in your contract.

Lovelysummerdays · 11/02/2025 23:39

In my work if you don’t take the hours then you lose them. I think it’s really poor tbh. You are allowed to carry over 10% though. They won’t put through holiday pay unless you book the time off ime

FallenRaingel · 11/02/2025 23:39

Only your company can tell you what their policy is.

Vegboxwonder · 11/02/2025 23:40

Check your contract and staff handbook/intranet. Otherwise, ask your manager or HR. Some employers might let you carry the hours over to next year, or pay for them. Other places, you'd just lose them.

DoItBetter · 11/02/2025 23:42

What is the reason you can't use them?

KnickerlessParsons · 11/02/2025 23:43

You can probably carry them over. Or just use them.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/02/2025 23:44

Have you tried to book them? You need to. Do you get the minimum 28 statutory days holiday?

HelloVeraPlant · 11/02/2025 23:44

Check. My workplace pays it out. Others you just lose them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/02/2025 23:55

You need to check. Thee is no "probably " about it.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/02/2025 23:57

Some organisations let you carry over 5 days. You need to try to book and have the conversation about your options, and the reason it wasn't taken.

Redglitter · 11/02/2025 23:59

We can carry over 35 hours anything over that you lose unless there are special circumstances.

As pp said you need to ask HR

Hellohelloworld · 12/02/2025 00:27

i've checked my contract doesn't state nothing about it, only if i left my job they would get paid

OP posts:
Needspaceforlego · 12/02/2025 00:38

If the contract doesn't say I'd assume its "use it or lose it".
Can you not just book a day and half off have a long weekend?

Enough4me · 12/02/2025 00:40

OP you need to ask your HR dept.

Unless you get more than statutory leave, it is technically illegal to pay for them unless it is at the point of termination. Employers are not allowed to deprive workers of their statutory leave for any reason, but it is only in certain specific cases (long term sickness or maternity leave) that the law allows any to be carried over. So the only correct answer is that it is up to your employer and no matter what anyone says, anything you told here is a guess and nothing more. You need to ask your employer.

JoyousPinkPeer · 12/02/2025 09:33

Ask if you can carry them forward to. Ext leave year. If they say no, try to book them this leave year.
If you only get the statutory 28 days they have to let you take them or carry them over - you can't be made to lose them.

LavenderBlue19 · 12/02/2025 09:36

It depends entirely on your company's rules. If your contract doesn't say anything about it then you probably can't carry it over or get paid, but ask HR.

Why can't you book any holiday between now and April?

LIZS · 12/02/2025 09:39

You need to ask your manager if you can carry any over into next leave year. Often there is a limit in amount and a timeframe to use or lose. Approach them with a plan as to when you would take it.

LostittoBostik · 12/02/2025 09:39

If they won't let you book them then they have to pay you for them

Changingplace · 12/02/2025 09:40

Your work will have a policy about it, you need to talk to your manager or HR.

I can carry over 5 days but then those days need using with two months of the new holiday year. Anything over that you lose if you’ve not taken it.

No they don’t, OP has had all year to use the holidays, it’s down to internal policy whether they can be carried over or paid out, they don’t have to do either.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/02/2025 09:47

At my work the unclaimed holiday pay goes into a fund that buys holiday properties for the use of the employees. Not in UK.

JimHalpertsWife · 12/02/2025 09:50

Have they declined your request to use them? When can they offer you 12 hours of leave before 31 March?

LoveBluey · 12/02/2025 09:56

Dependent on company. Mine is now use it or lose it. Previously I could carry over 5 days but they had to be used within first 3 months of the following year.

Anonforthis58 · 12/02/2025 10:40

KnickerlessParsons · 11/02/2025 23:43

OP said in her initial post that she can’t use them.
You can’t just carry them over. Most companies write unused holiday information in the contract - I’m surprised they haven’t 🤔 There’s more chance of losing them than being allowed to carry them over.
