Stick to current job or look for a new one

I am 50 and work for a large company, very corporate. I am an accountant. I am trying to decide whether to look for a new job or stick to this one; a bit more info

Nice colleagues
Additional benefits like purchasing holidays, top up pension, insurance
Work is ok when I am left to get on with it or at least I have got used to it.

Very corporate, frequent feedback, etc.
Client facing role
Have to keep utilisation/chargeable time up
Boss is very changeable can be nice but can also be a bit difficult and unfair at times; you don’t know what to expect and I dread it a bit when I get messages from them/need to speak to them.

I think I want to change but can’t face having to start again, meeting new people, new systems, new responsibilities, etc. DH is planning to retire in the next 5 years and I was hoping to go part time; my pension is not that great but trying to build it up.

What sort of level are you? Are you in a practice?

Do you want to stay in accountancy or branch out to general operations/management?

Thank you. I am in practice; previous to current role I was in industry, and worked as Finance Manager. My current role is Manager.

I think as you get older it gets more difficult to move jobs, jump into the unknown again. I think I will stay in accounting as that is where most of my experience is.

Could you get an FC role somewhere? No stress on utilisation / growing fees. Industry normally pay better / have better pension than practice, although I've only worked for listed companies not small privately owned which may skew my insight.

Thank you; yes I have good experience as FC but with small to medium size companies,

Apart from Indeed and Linkedin how else people job hunt these days? Recruiters?

Ultimately, what work do you prefer?
Learning new systems etc is only for a relatively short time.

Or hold off until you want to go part time and look for a part time job then?

Sign up with a few recruitment agencies and see how it goes? LinkedIn is very hit and miss.

I think I am going to look for a much better paid job in industry. I don’t see opportunity for progression in current job, I am competing with people 20 year younger, who I actually enjoy working with; however they have no family commitments and can put up all the hours required; most of them start straight after university.

I also don’t feel valued by my boss; can’t keep up with constant systems developments, compliance, constant feedback, trying to keep 70 percent utilisation, etc.

It has been a wonderful experience but time to move on.

Yes it's nearly all recruiters, even in linkedin. Sign up with Michael page / Hays and let them do the work.

In theory they'll see what you are after responsibility wise etc and pitch you for the right job / salary etc. In reality the ones I've dealt with just throw you any job to get their commission, but as it's a % of your starting salary at least they drive the offer up
