Medical receptionist interview

Hi all. I have an interview lined up for a medical receptionist role. It will be part time in a GP office. I'm coming back to work after a few years, I have some experience doing receptionist work on a voluntary basis so not a whole lot of experience to draw from. What can I expect in the interview? I read patient confidentiality and discretion are important.

Common Interview Topics:

  1. Customer Service & Communication:
  2. How would you handle a difficult or upset patient?
  3. Can you describe a time you provided excellent customer service?
  4. How would you handle a busy reception with multiple patients needing assistance at once?
  5. Confidentiality & Discretion:
  6. What do you understand about patient confidentiality (e.g., GDPR, NHS guidelines)?
  7. How would you handle a situation where a patient’s relative asks for information about their treatment?
  8. Organisational & IT Skills:
  9. Have you used appointment booking systems before?
  10. How would you manage a high volume of calls and walk-in patients simultaneously?
  11. How do you prioritise tasks when under pressure?
  12. Teamwork & Adaptability:
  13. How would you support a colleague who is struggling during a busy shift?
  14. How do you handle changes, such as new procedures or software?

Tips for Success:

  • Emphasise transferable skills from your voluntary experience, such as communication, organisation, or handling sensitive information.
  • Be ready to discuss confidentiality—you don’t need deep legal knowledge, but demonstrating awareness of patient privacy is key.
  • Show a calm and professional attitude, as GP offices can be busy and sometimes stressful environments.
  • If asked about weaknesses, frame them positively (e.g., "I haven’t worked with [specific software], but I am a quick learner and comfortable with new systems").
