Presentation for an interview

Blopblip · 09/02/2025 19:47

My background is consulting and I've always made fancy PowerPoints.

I'm interviewing for an Association. They've asked to prepare a presentation for the interview maximum 3 slides (and they've given 3 questions)

My Qs are : Can I add an extra slide or two for introduction to the topic before going on to the details, and a conclusion, appendix etc ?
Do I make it fancy / use colour / add some transition or make it plane white background and consistent formatting and focus on content.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thank you.

If they've said 3 slides max, I'd stick to that.

I wouldn't just have plain white, but nor would I have lots of different transitions, or different colours. Just some smart borders or something, with the points coming in one at a time if that helps with the presenting of it.

They’ve said 3 slides. You can’t add more - you’ll look like you can’t follow instructions.

Transitions are awful, do not use them!

MayaPinion · 09/02/2025 20:04

No, if you can’t take instruction for a basic presentation it sends a clear sign that your own preferences are more important than the needs of the organisation. They don’t really care what the presentation looks like as long as everything is clear and spelled correctly. They want to know that you can present, you know what you’re talking about, and you have some good ideas. The less text the better. Keep to the timeline and if they didn’t give you one take no longer than 10-15 minutes. Just choose one of the formats from the Design tab, and use Designer to make it look pretty and consistent, but the content and delivery is more important than an intricate design presentation. The last thing anyone needs is a sparkly presentation about homelessness.

Make it coloured and professional and exciting. Do not use transitions though as they’re lame.

Rainallnight · 09/02/2025 20:46

Obviously do not go above three slides.

mynameiscalypso · 09/02/2025 20:48

Three slides. No naff transitions. Remember that slides for a presentation are very different to fancy consulting slides (no offence meant, I was one for 15 years!)

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 09/02/2025 20:50

As others have said, don’t go overt three slides. Don’t use transitions.

You need a nice, simple, consistent format which looks professional and supports what you are saying, rather than trying to look flashy. Their focus should be on you, not the slides.

TokyoSushi · 09/02/2025 20:50

Just make 3 great looking slides, anything else says 'although you said this, I wanted to do this...'

Blopblip · 09/02/2025 21:56

Thank you so much everyone. I'm ready with three slides and content but my original Q was me overthinking from my last job whether I need to add something extra.

I still have 3 days to submit. Definitely overthinking it.

My pet hate when I’m interviewing is when a candidate turns up and the ppt text is verbatim the content of the presentation. What’s the point? I could have read the text myself. I like to see the main headings and possibly subheadings and to hear the candidate talking freely and confidently. Personally I like an intro, 3 exploration points and a wrap up. If u followed that structure u cd do 3 slides: intro, core content and wrap up. Alternatively, 3 slides for the 3 exploration points.

Fancy pants stuff not required but some nice formatting and definitely no times new roman. No transitions - I do not appreciate words exploding on screen etc 😆Quite like a wireless clicker as interviewee is then not faffing about with the keyboard.

good luck 😀

I would look on their website and try to match their website colour scheme and typeface.

This would also show you've researched the Association and what it does.
