How many grievances before leadership takes notice?

Am thinking of putting a grievance in against my manager - this person has had at least two others. The dept is a toxic mess and now everyone is finger pointing each other because of how this person managers her direct reports (and the expectation for team leads to performance management staff) / a lot of the team complaining. I had created a safe space for my team to grow if there were escalations but everyone is afraid especially as this person has got rid of someone in their short tenure in post. How many grievances need to be put in before they put a spotlight on that person. I have started hating the job because of this but there are not many jobs around in my field of work. WWYD?

Is this a Senior leader as you talk about your own team.
why can’t you go to their Manager ?

Frankly, there may be a shortage of jobs in your field, but find one! No matter what you and others think, if this manager is surviving multiple grievances already, then no number of grievances will make any difference. She may not be managing the way you would like it, but (and I am not taking sides about who is right) her managers obviously think that she is managing the way they want it done, and they are not likely to change their minds on that.

Unfortunately I can think of several people like your manager, and they always survive multiple grievances - it is usually the person who puts in the grievance who ends up being moved or managed out. And after a bit people won't submit grievances because they know that. Eventually they all leave anyway, but under their own steam.

I'd love it if this wasn't true of your situation, but the only way to show that is for there to be lots of grievances, and that is a risky strategy.

honestly? If topmost management have her back, no amount of grievances. In my previous job I had a director who had had complaints filed against him for aggression and threats by SIX different members of staff. He's still there, boasting that he has an indefinite contract and there's no way they'll "get him" (helps that he's a lawyer so knows exactly what to say). I got out - took my time, found somewhere better, but ultimately if no action was taken on the first or second complaint, I would have no faith in top management to take action on any subsequent incidents.

I’m a bit unclear why a manager expecting certain standards of performance is grounds for grievance? I mean, I get people don’t like it especially if there haven’t been KPIs/targets before but it doesn’t sound like an awful thing to ask of line managers.

How do people know how many grievances a person has had? It's not public knowledge surely?
