Made a typo on job application :(

God I’m kicking myself, despite spending a solid hour on tailored application for a job I really wanted, I realised I accidentallly made a typo (they sent me an automated email of my application afterwards).

No typo’s in my CV or cover letter, however it was one of those application forms where although you attach your CV it still gets you to fill out your experience in their sections if that makes sense. I made a single typo but now I can’t unsee it and I’ve heard recruiters reject applications straight away after a typo.

I’m gutted, should I withdraw my application then re-apply without that typo or do I just leave it?
It’s one of those rare times I felt I exceeded every part of the job ad but now I’ve made a bloody typo 😭

How bad is the typo - appreciate that saying what it was would be outing, but can you give a comparable example of it?

I am pretty harsh because we get hundreds of applications to review per post and I generally reject people who don't follow the instructions (eg no cover letter) or have clearly just copy + pasted applications. I wouldn't reject for a typo.

lemongrizzly · 08/02/2025 14:33

Some systems won’t let you withdraw and resubmit so I wouldn’t risk that - it might take you out of the running altogether then

LittleRedRidingHoody · 08/02/2025 14:44

I wouldn't reject for a typo on an application, as long as it's only one!

Whyherewego · 08/02/2025 14:45

We are not allowed reject for typos (obviously where it's clear it was)

I applied for a job as a Mananager. Still got it!

A minor typo wouldn't even hit my radar, you'll be fine.

heyhopotato · 08/02/2025 15:25

I don't reject for typos unless they also put somewhere that they have great attention to detail (or a similar sentiment).

Shiningout · 08/02/2025 15:42

One typo shouldn't be an issue, if it was littered with them and the job required written communications and attention to detail yes but not one typo on an otherwise good application.

I’m a recruitment manager, one mistake would not impact any applications my team receive. Ironically my director pushed me to reject such applications in an email riddled with poor spelling…

As a company we have a large focus on AI usage. I have no issue with AI being used to fill in applications, I use it daily to craft work documents, email, analyse reports. But it needs to be used by people who know how to. There are a lot of free courses online for this, which I strongly recommend all individuals use to be honest.

AI becomes an issue when the user doesn’t prompt properly. It’s there to enhance, not replace. So we frequently reject applications, which are almost word for word. It’s pasting the job description and application questions in with ‘job description and questions. What’s the best response’ basically.

Personally, I find AI really useful. But yeah, it’s all about what you put in to it. Another useful way is to also provide a sample of your writing and ask it to write the content you’re asking for in that style.
