IDEAS FOR OWN BUSINESS???????

Dalrymps · 07/05/2008 23:13

I really want to set up my own business, one I can run from home, possible internet based. My background is in art and design. I did a product design degree. I'd like it to be something to do with babies/children. For the life of me I can't think of an idea though.
So.... feel free to suggest as many ideas as possible

Hi there, I looked into setting up my own business last year, but with one thing and another, the timing wasn't right. The best bit of advice I got from the variety of people I talked to was to do something you know to start with. It means that you have less of a learning curve, less likely to make mistakes and can take advantage of any contacts you have in your sector.

That said, if what you are doing is not floating your boat, then that is not what you want to hear!

Design work can definitely be done remotely from home, as can consultancy work, there are a lot of freelance opportunities in the media and creative areas (been looking myself for after lo born....)

Not that helpful, I'm afraid, but it is such a personal thing. Looking for your niche where there is enough money in it to make a living (or even wild profits) is sooooo hard.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, yeah it's hard to think of something that'll actually make you a good enough living and therefor will be worth doing.

If you like working with children, can either train or find someone to work with who is trained and premises - then I would suggest a daycare nursery.

Good day care nurseries always have waiting lists and are recession proof, IME.

Have considered this option, not 100% sure though. You have any idea how long it takes to train?

Two years to become a level 3 child care practitioner.

Dalrymps · 08/05/2008 22:40

Is that whilst working? If so would I have to work full time?
Any more ideas anyone?

Hi there,

I became a Pampered Chef consultant last year when my twins were 6 months old. I also had a 3 1/2 year old and because of childcare costs I was unable to return to my old job as a Buyer.

I looked at lots of Party Plan companies, as I didn't fancy stacking shelves in Sainsburys or working in a pub and was very impressed by the support and training that The Pampered Chef provides. I've just completed my first year, have a team of 3, acheived a trip to Monte Carlo (5* of course), as well as a good salary and a kitchen full of fabulous products.

I wish I had done this years ago!

If you want any more information, please have a look at my website:

Good luck!

Tippysam - Had a look, it looks quite interesting, although Berwick is a small town, i'm thinking I might soon run out of people to sell to? You live in a small town?
One thing I did want to ask which is irrelevant is, I noticed there was a nice bakers mat for rolling/measuring pastry, is there any chance I could buy one and that you could have it here by tuesday? Just wondering cause my mil wants one and it's her birthday tuesday. No problem if you can't, just thought i'd ask

Have you thought about photography? Always seems a market round here for Venture style photos of babies and children...and you can work fromhome.

Dalrymps · 10/05/2008 20:59

Hmm, I had thought about that in the past, did some photography when I was at art college and really enjoyed it. Just take pics for a hobby now but I could look in to that. Thanks for the inspiration!
