How to find temp jobs

Hi,

I'm a mum of one adorable toddler and I'm the main earner for our family. My husband is the SAHD. The industry I work in as a freelancer is going through a very rough patch, and there's no work to be found. We've had a look at our finances and it's scary how soon we'll run out of money.

My job is quite creative but doesn't really have many transferable skills. I'm happy to do anything at this point, however, I have to be able to give about a week's notice in case a job in my industry does come up. It's my career and it's what I'm trained for, and it will most definitely pay better than any temp job i can find, so I'd have to give up the temp job right away.

That requirement doesn't make my job search any easier, of course. I'm mainly trying to look for very short term temp jobs (literally anything, that anyone can do, like handing out flyers or helping out in a shop, or factory work, etc.). Where can I find these type of jobs where they just need someone for a few days, or even 1 day to fill in for someone who's ill? That way I won't have to commit to anything that would cause trouble if I need to hand in my notice.

Also, I've applied for JSA, and have an appointment later this week. Hopefully that will be approved and I'll get paid £90 a week. This doesn't come close to covering our mortgage and other bills, but it's better than nothing. It does raise the question what would happen if I would have the odd 1 day job here and there? Obviously I'd let them know I found some work, but do I then apply again straight after?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried recruitment agencies?

Recruitment agencies are definitely your best bet.

Most of them you’ll only have to give a day’s notice and if they like you/you’re reliable they’ll try to get you multiple jobs. The downside is obviously the type of jobs but it is what it is.

Think you have your answer. I used to temp in my student days - a few days here, a few weeks there! I might have to consider this too shortly again!

Thanks everyone, I'll start emailing recruitment agencies :)
