how do I advertise for tutoring?

First can I say that I am not using this thread as a means of advertising but I would really like any ideas if you have them.

I want to tutor children in my local area - but actually only want to have one or two children per week.
I taught for many years all over London but for the past 4 years have been training teachers so have been out of touch with parents/pupils. Im now at home with my babies and no longer working and could really do with a little extra money per week.

I don't know the schools in my area, and have put a little notice up in the local library - but no luck yet.
I'm really shy about approaching some of the people in our street who I've seen with children.

Is there something else I can do other than the ad in the library? I only know mums with toddlers/babies in my area - and at that, only a few.

thankyou

Can you afford to take out small ads in a local paper? Perhaps in a local private school parent's magazine, there may be contact email addresses on the school website ? What age group and to what end (11+, basic skills coaching ?)Suspect much is by word of mouth though.

south - Ive emailed them, thankyou for that link its excellent
Lizs- you're right, any tutoring I have done in the past is through word of mouth and just being approached by parents in the playground. Small ad - will call local paper, and what a brill idea about local private school mag
thankyou

I've been thinking about doing this as well. What do you do about tax etc?

vannah · 08/05/2008 14:46

hi cornsilk, I thought you can earn around £3k tax free? Im only hoping to tutor one child per week, dont think it would mount to much...but I guess if you are looking to do more then you'd need to fill out self-tax forms
good luck

You need to declare any money earned- the personal limit before you pay tax is around £4.5K, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't declare what you are earning. You should also be paying national insurance if you earn more than a certain amount per week ( around £60, I think). You need to speak to your local tax office and register as self-employed.

oops. Shows how much I know. Thanks hls

You should try www.businesslink.gov.ukIts good for lots of start up advise for example tax and NI thresholds. The tax threshold for 2008/2009 is £5435.

NI contributions are different if you're self employed to PAYE (pay as you earn). You pay a couple of pounds a week and then if you earn over a certain amount you have an extra payment at the end of the year calculated from your tax return.
