What was/is the longest (drive) commute you've done for a job and was it worth it?

Just that really. Considering a one hour drive each way twice a week for a job. It's much longer than I've ever commuted. Would love to hear of others' experiences...

1 hr 15 each way, 5 days per week, dropping to 3 days per week. Pre-children, it was worth it for the job but I wouldn’t do it again now as I was pretty much out of the house 7-7. Now I WFH permanently. What you’ve described doesn’t sound too bad.

It does depend on the type of driving IME. Free flowing, well lit dual carriageway is very different to winding, dark cross country driving with cars dazzling you all winter or stop start in town/city traffic for ages. I love driving but some types are definitely easier than others. Also helps if there is plenty of parking at your workplace and no worries about not getting a space if you are a bit late getting there etc.

I used to do an hour each day, two hours round trip. Long time ago. It would probably take almost four hours round now due to increased traffic.

Was it worth it? No, not for the salary. Not for the people I worked with who were vile. But I did love the job.

I’ve had a few jobs that needed 90 min commutes so 15 hours a week.

never again. I’ve wfh since the start of the pandemic and will never take an office based job again.

life is too short

An hour each way twice a week.
I used to do that 5 days a week, so 2 is great!
I live rurally so have to drive to the closest big town for work and for most shops so well used to it.

GoldMoon · 01/02/2025 17:59

Only about 12 miles but in a busy area and at busy times so could take much longer than a short journey should.

I recently left a job that was an hour commute so 10 hours driving a week as it was 5 days a week.

It was fine and not an issue. The shite job was the issue 😄

I do some sessional work which is in a variety of locations. My furthest location is up to 90mins drive. I wouldn't do that everyday, but I only do that role once weekly, and like a pp the mileage is paid as my work base for that role is classed as home. Also, the earliest I need to arrive is 09.30, and I tend to be away by 16.30. I wouldn't want to do that drive as well as 8-6 in the office.

I used to commute an hour and a half west, so against the traffic on the M4. That was glorious and far preferable to the 40 minutes on a good day across country to Guildford or round the M25 to Watford that could turn into in excess of an hour and a half on a very bad day. My favourite commute was to central London by motorcycle - never longer than 45 minutes, and absolutely lovely at 6am before the traffic, with a lovely (and cheap) cafe breakfast to enjoy.

Years Ago, pre kids, I used to work one day a week in London.
I’d get the bus to the station, then the first train of the day to London which took about 2.5 hours. Door to door, it was just over 7 hours of travelling, but I didn’t mind it for the first year or so, I got lots of work done on the commute & I liked catching up with my colleagues in the office.
As it was on a Friday, occasionally, dh would finish work early, get the train down after work and
we’d have a lovely weekend in London.

I eventually began to find the commute tiring and started to dread the journey, it felt my Fridays were non existent. I could never plan anything as I’d get back home too late.
After 2 and a bit years of doing that, I packed it in and found a job 4 days a week with only a half hour commute each way. Needless to say, it was less stressful and I loved having my Fridays back!

Main thing for me would be if you can use the commute to decompress/listen to a podcast/audio book etc or if you find it a massive stress. If you have a nice car and easy parking maybe the commute is fine!

I've just accepted a job that is similar ~50 mins each way, two days a week. I don't think it's that long for just 2 days.
They also allow very flexible hours so on my office days I'll do something like 7:30-16:00, avoiding a bit of the rush hour traffic.
