Do you have a Non office/screen job?

I've always hated working, but I've come to realise that's because I'm sat on my arse all day staring at a screen 9-5.

I feel like i wa doing something, not necessarily physical, I might feel totally different about earning a living. I also like the idea of not working the same days every week, for a bit of variety.

For those of you who don't have office jobs, what do you do and do you enjoy it?

I imagine a lot of these will be heslthcare or emergency services related.

Lots of jobs that are more like 60/40 office jobs - going out to see clients etc.

I'm a nanny and I (mostly) love it.

I'm a jeweller, I use a laptop once or twice a month to do invoicing.
I check my phone for messages and emails, and reply when required, but majority of my work is not at a screen. Lots of getting up to use different equipment, run errands etc, but it's mostly sitting down

All my jobs have been screen free, post-call centre hell of my early 20s! It’s the only way IMO.

Singer
Cake maker
Deli worker coffee baker person
Cake maker from home
Cake decorating teacher
Singing teacher - sorry you asked if we enjoy it - this is my current job, love it! Love talking to so many people and singing all day!

Oh also was a nanny in my late teens - now I am a mum I look back with horror that anyone hired a teen to accompany their kid across London etc….. but it was fun and varied!

Working in early years, enormously fulfilling, but terrible pay

RabbitsRock · 24/01/2025 19:56

I work (standing up) on a checkout in a well known store & mostly really enjoy it.

You may discover the grass is not always greener.

if you ever get seriously ill or become disabled, most computer based jobs you can just keep working. instead of struggling on long-term sick pay or disability benefits, you get to keep earning a nice income.

plus predictable hours make arranging child care much cheaper.

predictable hours also makes it easier to set doctors appts far in the future while minimizing the possibility of missing shifts. you see lots of specialists, this can be really important.

Driving instructor. Mostly it’s great but hard work and very sedentary. Not sure how long I’ll do it because of the health implications.

Don't want to be too outing but I sit at a desk most the day face to face with clients

Spend about 30 mins a day doing the booking and social media side

so barely any screen time but just bloody hate sitting down all day tbh. My backs in agony all the time

stargirl1701 · 24/01/2025 20:03

Primary school teaching.

University professor. I love lecturing and discussing ideas with the students. I need to do very little screen time to teach a class. Just at the beginning of the semester to upload documents and make the syllabus, then answering emails here and there throughout the semester.

And the other side of the coin is that lots of health issues arise from sitting on our arses looking at screens all day.
