I fractured my ribs at Christmas ice skating
Along with that my Drs have given me antibiotics for a chest infection detentions.
I work in a school and I as supposed to be back last week.
Dr has given me to weeks off and told me to have a x Ray.
Worried about work as they are short staffed.

You've broken a bone.
Please take the time to heal properly, and listen to the medical advice the doctors are giving you.

Yes, work may struggle, but your health had to come first. If school are desperate they can employ cover staff to carry out your essential tasks.

Depends what your job is, is it physical or sitting at a desk? My DH broke ribs and he didn’t have any time off work but his job is sitting at a desk all day, he wouldn’t have managed that if his job was more physical. Have you followed the advice and gone to get an x ray?

I didn't take any time off with broken ribs and I do a manual job.
I took co codamol which made it just possible.

This is clearly not "just" broken ribs, and the chest infection could easily develop into something that exacerbates the problem. If your GP is saying that you need time off work then do as they are told and stop feeling guilty. Your colleagues will manage, they wouldn't want you to do something that might make you worse - and if they did want you to then they aren't worth your time thinking about their problems!

Your health is the priority here. You must have time off to heal and recover properly. If not you'll end up with a worse problem later on.
The school will cope.
I have a nice admin job but was off for 6 weeks with a broken ankle. They were very hot on their duty of care to make sure I was ok and didn't rush back.

Oreosareawful · 13/01/2025 13:00

I think everyone is different and the same broken bone can affect people differently.
I've broken ribs and my ankle in the last couple of years and not missed a day in the office. I couldn't drive, so I got a lift in and back again.

I also regularly point this out to my boss if he starts joking about my Bradford score 😂

Have you actually had the Xray recommended back at the time of the accident? Your post reads as if you haven't done this.
Follow your doctor's advice.
You could contact school and say you can do admin duties/explain what your restrictions are. If you are going to be off for a few weeks, let them know asap so that they can make the appropriate arrangements for cover.

I broke a rib last year, I only had a couple of days off but I had a desk based job. At the I thought if I had a different job I would be off for a while. Hope the pain eases off soon.

I am at school in admin but it's very busy and to be honest it's both sides of my ribs I am not sleeping very well and just feel lousy.
Trying to get comfortable is a pain.
I just don't really know how they will take me bring off because I work in a office

Broken ribs are very painful! I'm a teacher and was teaching in Reception class some years ago, when I broke 3 ribs (2 on my left side, one on my right). I did it at school too (was choking and needed the Heimlich Manoeuvre to release the trapped food 😨). This was one of the scariest moments of my life as my airway was COMPLETELY blocked and I had turned blue!

The force of the manoeuvre broke my ribs...but as I said afterwards, rather a few broken ribs than dead 🤷‍♀️

Honestly never felt pain like it...and I definitely couldn't do my job teaching Reception children! I had two weeks off, and even then, I was swapped into Year 4 for a few weeks, as I couldn't manage with the little ones (too physical!)

Your school will cope...stay home and heal 💖
