Branford factor poor attendence

So I wanted some advice of what people would do as I get conflicting advice at home

This time last year my mother passed away I had looked after her for 8 years unfortunately she got sepsis and died I had a month off from work in that time so I could be with her.

over the past year my health has declined quick I’ve had 5 sick days over the past six months I am under a consultant for suspected chrons disease and having tests for unexplained nausea which work know about last Friday I had norovirus which meant I had to take more time off work.

this week I’ve gone back into work and we have a flu outbreak I work in a care home so everyone has it all residents and try as I might I’ve caught it part way through my last shift I ended up breaking down crying as I felt severely unwell luckily I’ve got 2 days off now before I have to go back for 3 x 12 hour shifts but I don’t feel I’ll be well enough to go which would mean 6 absence in 6 months!

people already make comments like she’s phoned in sick again! And my manager even though has been given hospital and consultant letters has said we need to discuss your attendence I don’t know what to do I don’t feel like I can work 12 hour shifts in a care home wearing a mask with flu would you phone in sick or would you still try and attend?

I work on a night so don’t see my managers and once I go I’m preety much stuck there for 12 hours I wouldn’t be able to leave which is what’s putting me off

I hate Bradford Score. Thankfully it got scrapped at my work.

I wouldn't be taking potential flu into a care home & I'd be furious if I had family in one & the staff came in ill

My attendance has been discussed with management. Like you I have several long term medical issues but it was for support. We discussed my conditions & any potential reasonable adjustments so don't assume a meeting is a bad thing

Hope you're better soon

I hope it is and I’m not gonna get the sack I actually enjoy my job and love the residents

I agree with the not going in however we had a member of staff call my manager and say they were unwell but still coming in as she they didn’t want to let him down this was praised!

you can see why I’d worry also I was only off this time last week with norovirus to now have flu it’s knocking me around terrible 😞

If you are abemt because of long tee health conditions, this should not affect yur Bradford Score.

Have you been assessed by Occupational Health?

No how would I do that can I ask even though I’m just a care worker?

Do you have 1:1 meetings with your line manager? I'd ask if they'd put you forward for OH assessment at your next meeting.
If not, just ask your manager.
Are they aware of your health conditions?

MyBeloved · 12/01/2025 02:21

Any employee can be seen by OH.

They are yeah I’m currently waiting for a colonoscopy already had a endoscopy however the consultant said he needed to do a colonoscopy really before formal diagnosis however he suspects Crohn’s disease I have brought all hospital letters for this and a letter from consultant I have had 1:1 but they have just said so far mind your Bradford score

obviously now I know it’s gonna go to a meeting I will be asking in the meeting for a OH meeting

Good luck OP. Just remember, they have a duty of care towards you and are legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments.

QuarterHorse · 12/01/2025 02:43

Chrons is classed as a disability so you would be covered by legislation and I would make sure your manager knows that.
Like others have said, I would not want staff with flu going into work and driving yourself into the ground with irritate your condition too.

Not all businesses have contracts with OH providers. It is not a universal thing.

I'd be amazed if a registered care home did not offer Occupational Health for employees.

NonplasticBertrand · 12/01/2025 18:24

Only 50% of UK employees have access to OH.

That's shocking, although probably more small businesses than larger organisations

Again, I'd be very surprised if a registered care home did not have OH access.

Best of luck, OP.

I ended up calling in sick and they were fine and sympathetic but said I would be having a attendence meeting which I expected I’m just too unwell to go in
