How long is too long - commute

Been offered a great job - more senior, reputable organisation, known for good hybrid and flexible working long before covid so no chance of it becoming full time office, supportive of development, good progression opportunities, big pay rise, fills some significant gaps on my CV for future opportunities...

My sticking point is the commute for the two days in the office and whether I suck it up for the benefits.
There's two office bases I'd be working between - with no traffic main office is an hour and 15, and second office is an hour.
Normally I think main office 1.30/1.45 and second office about 1.20.

It's a national opportunity so in time I'd possibly be able to apply for a transfer to a closer role to home - but no guarantee or timeframe on that.

I miss having a job where we spend time together as a team in an office - so whilst there are some other opportunities that are almost entirely remote working, I just don't think I'd enjoy them.

Obviously it's a long commute. I enjoy driving, have a reliable and economical car, and could also do it in similar time via train if I wanted to. But it's going to be long days...

I think that’s ok
it is long but for all the positives you’ve outlined, I’d manage it for the two days per week you need to do it

Pammela2 · 11/01/2025 10:57

I think it sounds fine, it’s not everyday. Some people still commute everyday and had no wfh options.

I think everyone has forgotten about commmuting etc and sometimes you do have to make some sacrifices for the long term. This used to be the norm, only since covid have the expectations changed.

Sounds okay to me for 2 days a week - especially as you'll be sitting in your own car and not standing on crowded trains.

martinisforeveryone · 11/01/2025 11:09

Impossible to say without knowing your other home and life commitments, but on the face of it, given all the positives and future benefits you describe, then yes, I'd do it and probably by train so you could be using the time doing something else while commuting.

Thanks all - that's really reassuring!
I'm leaning the same way - it's worth it and 2 days a week is manageable - but just needed the reality check that I wasn't being too "rose tinted glasses" about it.

I do a 2 hour train commute in either direction. It's fine. I do prefer to WFH though and my office days aren't strictly monitored so if I didn't feel up for it, I don't have to. Driving would take 90 minutes but I usually get the train.

pandapopadance · 11/01/2025 11:27

I do the same distance once or twice a week. It's ok, just a bit frustrating if there is an accident. Just make sure you have good afterschool care so you aren't stressing on the drive home.

phoenixbiscuits · 11/01/2025 11:28

It's a nice train journey as well, never had to stand at any point, usually get a couple of seats to myself and a Greggs where I change trains and buy a bacon sandwich 😂

Do it, great company, good name, experience, growth, ticks all the boxes.

In terms of the commute, you are in your own space, listen to audible. It relaxes you, mellows you and the drive doesn't antagonise you as much.

I've had many different work places over a course of 35 years (consultancy) but commutes by car are the best (yes there can be traffic jams but you are in your own space - better than commuting by train or plane). I used to relish getting into my car commuting to and from work. It was my 'me' time, I've listened to hundreds of books, from classics, biographies to airport fiction, that I would never had the inclination to listen to otherwise.

JoyousPinkPeer · 11/01/2025 12:48

That's fine e, I used to do 1.25 commented each way for 5 days- gruelling.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 11/01/2025 13:28

If it's only 2 days it's fine. My commute is 2 hours each way, no way I'd do it more than 1 or 2 days a week.

This was my commute years ago before wfh and I had to do it 5 days a week. I couldn't do it.
