Recruiter suggested I apply for another role, does this mean I'm in with a good chance?

I've been out of work for about four months now and I'm actively seeking a new senior job. I saw one I liked on LinkedIn and emailed the agent yesterday asking for the candidate pack and giving a few details about my previous role and why I'm interested in this job.

He viewed my profile yesterday and emailed me this morning with the pack (role 1) but he also said he thought I might be a better fit for another role that the recruitment agency has on its books and sent me that pack too (role 2).

I have already seen role 2 and I'm interested in it as it is a better fit for my experience. I hadn't realised it was the same agency because the agent for role 2 is different. Role 1 has more salary than role 2 but both salaries are a big step up from my previous salary. I was planning on applying for role 2 anyway.

He copied in the agent for role 2 and said agent 2 would be happy to explore it further with me. He's asked me to confirm with both of them.

My question is, are they just getting more numbers of applicants by asking me to apply for role 2, or do they think I stand a good chance of getting it? My full detailed CV is on LinkedIn so they know my experience.

I think if they were just looking to up the numbers he might have said "apply for role 2 as well" rather than you're a better fit for role 2.

I would appreciate any comments, particularly from recruiters.

Well, the recruiters at least think you fit the brief. They want to get paid, which means placing a candidate. And they don't particularly want to annoy the people who pay them by sending unsuitable candidates. Whether the hiring manager agrees with them depends on how good the recruiter is and whether they genuinely understand the brief. But it's certainly a good start.

Thank you. I don't want to get too excited but you've worded that really well.
